10/31/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Friendly, bouncy, playful, affectionate all describe our boy Marcus. So handsome in his brindle coat with white socks, his eyes meet mine and a friendship was born. Easy to leash and happy to get outside to go potty, we head to the park, Marcus leading the way as he pulls on the leash. He may do better in a harness and/or use some leash training to make it a more enjoyable walk for both ends of the leash. In the park the squirrels are scurrying around getting ready for winter and Marcus would love to join them in some play. Sorry Marcus, no squirrels! Off leash in the yard he busily explores our pen, leaving no scent unsniffed, shows off his ‘sit’ and takes treats enthusiastically. In group play he’s social, playful and engages in running play with both males and females. After a good game of fetch, Marcus poses for some pictures and gives me some snuggles. Active, energetic and with a tail that never stops wagging, Marcus is looking for a fun, active family where long walks, playtime, and a good game of fetch are all on the daily ‘to do’ list. He’s a gorgeous boy ready to join in his new person’s activities and hopes that it all starts today.
10/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Marcus pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was excited and mouthy (light) during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Marcus was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Marcus took the toy and the rawhide with a soft body language. Marcus appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy.) Marcus is quick to use his mouth in play and has poor body awareness, resulting in him mouthing handlers with light pressure. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced home. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 3. Dog consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes the rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the rawhide, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. When off leash with other dogs, Marcus engages in brief bouts of play. He is a bit sexually motivated and makes some attemtp to mount.
10/27/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Marcus will engage in running play with both males and females but has shown some sexually motivated behavior, including mounting other males. Based on the interactions seen in the shelter the behaivor team feels that Marcus should have a pre-adoption interaction before going to a home with another dog. When off leash with other dogs, Marcus engages in brief bouts of play. He is a bit sexually motivated and makes some attemtp to mount. 10/28: Marcus is social and playful with males and females. 10/29: Marcus engages in rough play with other playful dogs. He may be pushy when attempting to solicit play. 10/30, 31 update: Marcus is a bit sexually motivated but will engage in running play when solicited. 11/3 update: Marcus engages in rough running play with a group of males. 11/4 update: Marcus is sexually motivated and does not cease attempting to mount once corrected. 11/5 update: Marcus engages in brief bouts of play with a solicitous male.
