A volunteer writes:
Maple… Yes, she is the color of the delicious fudge made from the Maple tree. She is adorable, sweet and so petite, full of energy despite the cold that affects her. Maple is said to be one year old. She looks and acts even younger. She is incredibly affectionate and would spend her time in her caretaker’s arms, like a human baby. This is how I took her picture as she was perched on the shoulder of another volunteer, holding on tight to her. She is a kisser and a hugger. Maple pulls a little on the leash as part of her general enthusiasm. She is high energy, runs for, jumps high in the air and catches a ball. She mouths like a puppy and plays tug of war. She is very loving and sociable but needs to be taught proper manners to become the adult best friend, everyone will envy. Maple needs an active owner who will provide her with plenty of exercise and things to do as well as the training that any young dog needs. Maple is smart, very eager to please and to learn and is waiting at the Manhattan Care Center for her new master and teacher. She needs you now.

Maple came in as a stray surrender so her past behavior in a home is unknown. At intake Maple was reported to be very receptive to introduction and was loose and responsive to petting.  She allowed all handling and was reported to walk well on leash and was responsive to guidance. During SAFER Maple was very sociable, and allowed the assessor to conduct all handling items without issue. She did become a bit over aroused and mouthy when playing tag with the assessor, but responded well to correction.  During the resources portion of the assessment Maple was easy to handle when engaged and she did not show any concerning behaviors when the items were removed, so the behavior department feels Maple is suitable for an “Average” experienced home.

Look: 1. Dog leans forward to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted.

Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body, and dog licks hands while lips are long.

Tag:2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Easily over aroused and becomes mouthy (no pressure applied)

Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back.

Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against her cheek.

Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy.

Rawhide: 2. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the rawhide, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.

Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Maple does well with both males and females and is interested in interacting but does not appear interested in play.

4/14 update: During a brief stay in a home environment, Maple was reported to be destructive. We have no further details about this behavior, but we suggest to future adopters that Maple will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys.

GROUP BEHAVIOR:

When off leash with other dogs, Maple is nervous but will raise her tail a bit in the yard. She lowers her tail, nervous, when greeted by a larger dog but is tolerant when greeted.

4/6 Update

Maple enjoys playtime with some puppies. She is very social and friendly with them but is very demanding of human attention. She gets excited and begins nipping at the heels of the handler.

4/8 Update

Maple does well with both males and females and is interested in interacting but does not appear interested in play.

4/9 Update

Maple is friendly and social and engages in play. She solicits for play with play bows.

4/11, 4/12 Update

Maple continues to be social and friendly with other dogs and engages in play with a social male.

4/17 update:

Maples to do well while socializing with other dogs.  She is solicitious and tolerant with both male and female dogs.
