09/02/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Described by her former owner as “friendly, affectionate and playful”, Mamas is an adorable little peanut in need of some TLC. Don’t tell Mamas that she doesn’t have any fur on her cute little face, or that her tail is bent strangely, or that she needs a mani/pedi, and in general needs better nutrition and care. She acts like she’s the most beautiful dog on the planet, and her personality says ‘yes I am!’. Curled up in her kennel when I first approached, she stood up happily ready for a walk. We’re told she’s housetrained and she proved it the moment we were out the door. Her leash manners are lovely, she posed for some pictures like a super model, and wanted to meet other dogs we passed in the park. We’re told that she knows ‘sit’ and ‘put it down’, likes to be brushed, is friendly, relaxed and playful with strangers and kids, loves to play fetch and sleeps in her own bed. She loves to be pet, holding her head up like a cat, and sometimes rubbing it against my leg. At the end of our time together I didn’t see any imperfections; I saw a sweet, loving, friendly little girl who’s looking for a new place to call home. She’s tiny and will fit into any living situation. Meet Mamas today and be prepared to fall head over heels in love with a munchkin.
09/03/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mamas did very well on her SAFER and has become more comfortable interacting with other dogs, but she has shown some discomfort with human handlers in other contexts. She tends to growl when approached in the kennel, often retreating to the back of the cage. One-on-one with a caretaker in the yard she approaches with a soft body and initiates physical contact, but may startle with quick movements, particularly movements toward her head. We recommend an experienced adopter willing to allow Mamas to warm up to her new home and new family at her own pace, and who will help Mamas gain confidence in new environments. 9/2 SAFER: Mamas walks calmly on leash. She was calm and relaxed during handling. Mamas was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She was not interested in food, toys or rawhide. Mamas approaches the helper dog with her tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip long. Mamas was surrender to us. Her previous owner describes Mamas as friendly, affectionate and playful with a medium activity level. Around strangers Mamas is friendly playful. Mamas has not lived with children but he is relaxed and playful around children and adults she does not know.
