BEHAVIOR
Mama came to our center as an owner surrender. It is reported she has lived with another dog, they played, ate, and slept together. Owner also reports Mama lived with children ages 6-17 and interacted well with them. Owner states she allows petting but not being picked up. Owner states Mama is wee wee pad trained. When she hears the doorbell ring, she will bark however she will keep to herself until she is comfortable enough to approach a visitor. It is reported she will bark and whine if left alone in the house and becomes nervous of loud noises and will howl. Mama stayed near her owner during the intake. She moved her head away when the Admissions Counselor approached her but with gentle words and treats, she allowed touching. Mama displayed anxious behavior in the SAFER assessment room, whining, crying, teeth chattering. Mama was very cooperative during SAFER assessment, allowing all handling, no whining or crying. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft. Mama stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, ears and tail neutral. She followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft. Mama did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She had no interest in Food, Toy, or Rawhide. In between items, while waiting for the helper dog, Mama cried and whined loudly to solicit attention. Mama approached the helper dog with her ears forward, tail above spine level, body relaxed. Due to her anxious behavior, the Behavior Team feels Mama may do best with an Experienced adopter. She may do best in a calm, quiet, structured environment where she knows what to expect and can relax in her new home. She may also do well living with another dog or someone home most of the day.
