11/16/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Her amber eyes are two flames illuminating Maleficent’s greying face. Beside her bright and red lush coat, they are the first thing I see looking at her. Maleficent is quite a pleasant gal, so ready to go out and be in company when I show up at her door. She just arrived at the care center and is willing to make friends right from the start. She is used to us humans and follows me to the street first, then into the yard. Despite some slightly weak hinds, Maleficent is a good walker and climbs stairs nicely. She does her business at once as we hit the street. She nears uneventfully other dogs. She will most likely have her chance at meeting her peers in playgroup. Maleficent can sit on command and of course for treats that she loves… most older dogs like to eat. A big smile comes on her face. She still has decent teeth and chomps heartily. Maleficent comes when called and as we are now officially friends (dry lung treats helping), she sits by my side, accepting caresses and blessing me with her beautiful smile. Maleficent is an elderly lady who came to us with no history. Who needs history when the future lays right ahead of us? Maleficent is a plain good girl, not a spring chick, sure, but a really nice dog who still has in her to make an owner happy. If you love older dogs, are compassionate and patient, Maleficent might be the right pooch for you. Come and meet this lovely dame at the Manhattan Care Center and make her yours. Another volunteer writes: This elegant lady is about as far from the Mistress of All Evil as you can get — the name does not suit her! She’s definitely a queen but not an evil one. Mal is a mature lady with the spirit of a much younger pup. Trotting out to the park — seriously, she has quite the pep in her step — she seemed at ease encountering people and other dogs. Although found as a stray, Mal has great leash skills and a general calm demeanor. Mal would make a great addition to your home if you like to get out for a couple of short walks a day but also like to chill out on the couch. Mal’s life hasn’t been a fairy tale up until now, but she is looking for her happy ending. For her, that would be a comfy bed and lots of treats. Will you be her Prince or Princess Charming?

11/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Maleficent came into our center after a member of the public found her as a stray. She was friendly upon intake and allowed all handling. Maleficent walked nicely on her relief walk, no pulling. She was friendly and social upon entering the SAFER assessment room. Maleficent held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, tail wagging. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, mouth open. Maleficent followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft, settling easily at end. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Maleficent had no interest in Toy. When off leash with other dogs, Maleficent greets politely and shows continued interest in re-approaching and interacting. The Behavior Team feels Maleficent would do well in an Average home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is wagging with relaxed body posture, mouth open. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 /2 : 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Toy 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Maleficent greets politely and shows continued interest in re-approaching and interacting.
