10/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Magnolia loves to pose for pictures. We could make a whole calendar with her photos.. What faces she makes….Silly and happy, sometimes serious….She is a lot of fun to be with! Magnolia has quite a lot of energy. She “does not do kennels…” She is kind of jumpy in there and sometimes takes it out on her blankie or carton of food. For no fault of her own, she has been with us for more than 3 months and she longs for freedom… She loves to be in a pen where she is rather collected, enjoying fully her time with her caretaker. She plays ball, running and jumping for it, catching it and not guarding it. She lets me dress her with various neckpieces. She is totally fine with it. We run through 3 open runs. Magnolia is really excited now. We play tag. More, more , more. She clearly feels safe in a pen and with a human presence. She is glad and relaxed to cuddle on the bench, rolls on her back, mouths my hand. She is a happy camper. On the leash, she is a bit shy, hesitant, wondering may be where we are going. I would love to see her face the dreamed day when she will be in a real home, sitting on a comfi bed and loved by a family. Beside the tender loving care she has received from her caretakers here at the care center, I doubt that little Magnolia has known the life of a cherished pet. She was most likely destined to be bred like her housemates but escaped that fate when she was seized from her former owners. Less harm has to be undone….Magnolia is a delightful gal who does need an experienced and active owner who will mind her past, work with her flaws and provide her with lots of exercise and things to do. Magnolia is a beautiful flower who just started to open in our yard. She will bloom ..in your hands.. Magnolia is at the Manhattan Care Center.
09/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Magnolia has been in ACC’s care since June. She has been a bit shy but overall social and interactive with her human caretakers. She has shown no significant behavior concerns with humans or with other dogs during her stay or during either of her behavior evaluations: a SAFER in June and a more thorough evaluation in September. When approached by the assessor, she was at the front of the kennel, relaxed but not overly social. She pulled lightly on leash and seemed anxious at first, pacing. She then began to relax and solicited attention. When loose in a room she ignored the assessor and sniffed the room calmly. She approaches when solicited but is distracted by noises. She allowed handling with a neutral body, and did not engage with the resources. When introduced to a life-size stuffed dog, Magnolia sniffed appropriately, was tolerant when the dog was made to behave rudely, and began racing around the room playfully when the dog was made to move back and forth. With a female dog through a barrier she approached immediately, sniffing with a relaxed body, then disengaged. When allowed to greet she sniffed appropriately, was a bit uncomfortable when sniffed by the helper but then relaxed, playbowed, and raced around with the helper. September assessment summary: Magnolia was mildly social with people and somewhat distracted by the environment. She was tolerant when handled. She was not interested in food and did not guard the pig’s ear. She was mildly nervous but tolerant of the toddler doll and tried to avoid the doll when hugged. She was mildly nervous when scolded, but recovered quickly. She was very interested in sniffing both the fake dog and the real dog, then became playful with both of them. 6/19 SAFER scores: Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Food 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful. Helper: A1040172
08/27/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs Magnolia is initially nervous and avoidant. She is tolerant of the helper dog mounting her but when she does eventually offer correction she pursues. After a long period of time Magnolia begins to solicit play. She then engages in mouthy rough play with another energetic female. 8/29 update: Magnolia engages in rough, mouthy play with a playful female. 9/3 update: Magnolia is social and solicitious. She will engage in rough play with both males and females.
