Madison came into our center to as an owner surrender along with another large female dog citing owner’s declining health. She allowed all handling during intake and was easy to place inside kennel. She pulled strongly on leash for her relief walk. Madison had a lot of movement and energy upon entering SAFER assessment room. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body relaxed. Madison stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, open mouth panting. She playfully engaged in Tag game, jumping playfully, settling easily at end of game. Madison did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, mouthing assessor’s hand with no pressure, jumping up on assessor at end of item. Madison playfully engaged with Toy but relinquished it easily. When off leash with other dogs Madison does not allow greeting and will offer a harsh correction when sniffed. After the helper dog walks away she will continue to approach and offer correction to him. The Behavior Team feels Madison would do best with an Experienced adopter. She may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture, open mouth panting.
Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, jumps on Assessor once play begins, settles easily at end.
Squeeze 1/ 2: 2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure.
Toy 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you.
Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Madison does not allow greeting and will offer a harsh correction when sniffed. After the helper dog walks away she will continue to approach and offer correction to him.
GROUP BEHAVIOR
Madison offers harsh, inappropriate corrections when off leash with other dogs and is reactive when on leash. When alone in pen, Madison approaches the gate to greet other dogs with a stiff body and may begin to growl and bark. If a small dog is adjacent to her she will charge the gate and snap. Madison came from a home with another female dog, but her behaviors in the home are unknown. Due to the concerns seen in the care center, the behavior department recommends that Madison does not go to a home with another dog until her behaviors can be followed up on.
When off leash with other dogs Madison does not allow greeting and will offer a harsh correction when sniffed. After the helper dog walks away she will continue to approach and offer correction to him.
