10/02/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
10/02/15 13:19 Basic information: Luigi is 1 year and 3 months. His previous owners got him from ACC and had him for 5 months but had to return him because they are moving into an apartment that doesn’t allow Pitt bulls. The last time Luigi went to the vet was 6/8/15. The two things his owners liked most about him were; he’s very playful when he is riled up, but if you are relaxed he will relax with you. Social Life and personality: Around children the ages of 6 and 8 Luigi is very playful but he is somewhat rough when he plays. Luigi jumps up and has scratched accidently without drawing blood. Around other dogs Luigi is respectful; at times he can walk right past a dog and won’t react to the dog at all, other times he would make eye contact, backs up toward his previous owner and barks. Luigi is not house-trained and has accident daily. He was kept indoors only. His activity level is high and he can be described as playful, pushy, confident, excitable, affectionate, anxious, and friendly. Behavior issues: When walking Luigi he is hard to control, he pulls on his leash. When left alone he is anxious, he wines, barks, pees in the home next to the front door or in the bath tub and rips up toilet tissues. If his food bowl was touched by his previous owner while he was eating he would look up and continue eating at the same pace. He is friendly if his treat or toy is touch while he’s eating or playing. He is friendly if he is pushed off the furniture but will jump back on. He enjoys water and taking a bath, he jumps into the shower willingly. He is friendly if his paws are touch, if his coat is brushed, or if is held or restrained. If an unfamiliar person approached the home he would bark before he saw them and then when they entered the home he would be cautious and crouch down but then he would sniff them and walk away. He is friendly if an unfamiliar person approached his previous owner. He isn’t bothered if he is disturbed while sleeping. For a New Family to Know: Luigi knows how to sit and lay down. He went on brisk walks 3 times a day. His favorite things to play with are string, rubber toys, socks and bottles. His favorite games are tug and wrestling. When his previous owners were home he would follow them around. When left alone he goes to the bathroom indoors and barks/whines. When off leash Luigi runs away. During storms he hides, barks and whines. Luigi eats dry Alpo and at night he slept in his owner’s bed or on the couch.
10/05/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: So handsome, so elegant….I was thrilled to have Luigi as my escort through the park. Taking care of business the moment we were out the door tells me he’s likely housetrained and off we go. He pulls on the leash a bit but is manageable and responsive, his tail wags as we walk and it’s clear he’s happy to be out. In the park we stop to take some pictures, Luigi showing off his ‘sit’ in exchange for a treat. His sit is a funny and cute ‘plop’ in a comical way that made me laugh. He’s a funny guy! A group of very young kids passed by and Luigi stood up to watch, his tail wagging gently as if he knows about kids….so much so that the adults in the group commented on his sweet demeanor. Luigi rocks! Play bowing to dogs met in the park, and anxious to meet dogs in adjoining pens, Luigi seems to welcome other dogs happily. Young, energetic, good looking and fun, Luigi is looking for a new family to take care of. Acing his behavior assessment means he may be a good fit in most homes…..could that be yours? Another volunteer writes: Luigi? More like Curious George! It’s such a treat to get out and about with a young chap like Luigi, everything and everyone he sees is cause for celebration and despite his serious face he’s actually full of good cheer and keen to explore all the world has to offer. Though he enjoys playing ball, chasing pigeons and chowing down on treats, socializing is definitely Luigi’s number one priority in life and he LOVES other dogs, running to watch a potential friend longingly through the fence and even trying to ‘dig’ his way to freedom and playtime with his new pal. Friendly, frisky and fabulously good-looking, Luigi will shine like a star in any active home and if yours includes some four-legged family members, all the better! Come meet your very own curious little monkey today, sweet Luigi is waiting…
10/05/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Luigi came to our center as an owner surrender due to housing issues. Luigi has been around children ages 6-8 and plays a bit exuberantly and rough with them, jumping up hard and accidentally scratching. It is reported Luigi is not housebroken. Owner reports he pulls hard on leash, and will destroy household items (such as toilet paper) and whine if left alone in the home. Owner reports Luigi likes water and sometimes jumps into the shower willingly. Luigi pulled hard on relief walk. He jumped onto assessor hard once in the SAFER assessment room. Luigi allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft, tail wagging. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, ears neutral, tail wagging. Luigi was distracted and focused on other stimuli during Tag game, unresponsive at each pass, barking and trying to get to things he was focused on in the room. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Luigi lifted his head and ceased eating when assess-a-hand came towards the Food bowl. He kept a firm grip on Toy and Rawhide, enthusiastically engaged, loose and wiggly body. When off leash with other dogs, Luigi is social and mostly engages in rough rowdy play, though sometimes selective and at times may hard bark and become stiff. The Behavior Team feels Luigi would do best with an Experienced owner that does not have Very Young Children. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners as well as crate training so he is not destructive when left alone in the home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 1. lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push him out. Toy 1: 1. settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. Rawhide: 1. settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. dog-dog: social, rough play, sometimes selective
06/02/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Luigi engages in rough play with other playful dogs. He may be selective with some dogs. Based on his behavior during playgroup, the behavior department recommends that a pre-adoption interaction be required for any potential home with a female dog. We advise against placement with a male, or smaller dog at this time. He seems do well with exuberantly playful dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Luigi is muzzled due to barrier reactivity. In the pen, he is a bit tense when greeting a male dog but may engage briefly in rowdy play when solicited. 6/3 update: Luigi greets with loose, wiggly body. He is bouncy and playful with both males and females. 6/4 update: Luigi is playful at first but then keeps to self after being corrected for attempting to mount. 6/5 update: Luigi is playful, bouncy and mouthy. He may, however, lack appropriate play skills. He may be selective with who he chooses to interact with as he hard barks and becomes stiff when a male is greeting at the gate. 6/7 update: Luigi is social and playful. He engages in rough play with both males and females. 6/8 update: Luigi is social and engages in rough, exuberant play with both males and females. 10/3 update: Luigi is solicitous and will engage in bouncy rough play with an energetic female. 10/6 update: Luigi is solicitous when introduced to another female. 10/7 update: Luigi engages in rough, running play with playful females. He may attempt to mount. 10/8 update: Luigi continues to engage in rough play with females. 10/9 update: Luigi engages in rough play with a solicitous female. He is mouthy and responds well to correction. 10/11 update: Luigi engages in rough, mouthy play with another playful dog. 10/14, 10/15: Luigi engages in mouthy, running play with another playful dog. 10/18, 10/19 update: Luigi continues to engage in rough play with females. 10/20: When introduced to a smaller dog, Luigi will briefly solicit play. When the smaller dog exhibits prey-like tendencies, Luigi becomes aroused, and displays prey driven behavior by rushing up to the dog and grasping her neck. He ceases when handler intervenes with correction. 10/21: Luigi engages in rough play with playful females. He begins to solicit play with another playful male, then eventually mounts.
