11/27/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Lucille is a young gal who was found as a stray and pretty scared to find herself alone in the street as well as in a big place like the care center. In the few days she has been with us, Lucille has calmed down a little. True that she started to show a bit of teeth when she saw my leash then, changed her mind and “gave” me her tiny neck. Lucille walks nicely and hops on the bench as soon as we entered a pen. She has no issue with me petting her all over but she does not want my treats. She does not seem interested in dogs sticking their nose at our gate and prefers to stay put tightly attached to my body. Time is of the essence when cats or dogs… or kids are scared. A slow approach and positive thinking. It certainly helped in the case of Lucille, an adorable little lady we have at the Manhattan Care Center. Let’s hope that soon enough Lucille will find her niche in experienced and loving hands.
11/25/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Lucille was difficult to remove from her kennel showing teeth, and lunges at the rope. Once she was out she walks calmly on leash. Lucille shows some concern during the sensitivity item, turning quickly and air snap at the assessor’s hand. The behavior team decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the resources Lucille showed some concerning behavior during toy tests – stiffening or growling, but did not escalate to a snap or bite to the assess-a-hand. The behavior department feels that she would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 5. Snap. Toy 4. Dog growls. When off leash with other dogs, Lucille is nervous and avoidant of interaction.
