06/20/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Rounding out the quartet of fabulous dogs abandoned together, Miss Luca is the shyest of the group. Needing a little coaxing to come out of her kennel, once out she proved to be as affectionate and schmushy as all of them, and equally as good looking. Like the others, she’s emaciated and is being fed an additional meal daily to help put some meat on those gorgeous bones. Her coat is as soft as the finest velvet, her eyes big saucers in her face, and as she gradually becomes more comfortable with me, lays her head in my lap and sighs. Her leash manners are good and as we walked she wagged her tail a bit enticing two people who wanted to meet her. She bravely said hello, allowed some petting, looking back at me for approval and a ‘good girl’. Off leash in a pen she greeted another dog in an adjoining pen with an easy tail wag and then came back to me for more petting. I left the pen for a few minutes and when I returned she was waiting quietly and wagged her tail with a bouncy step in greeting. Luca is a petite little girl who needs to gain weight and gain some confidence all of which she’ll do quickly once she’s with her new family. Gorgeous, friendly, easy and gentle, she’s a sweetheart who has a lifetime of cuddles and tail wags in front of her. Will you be the lucky one whose lap she’ll lay her head on, close her eyes and sigh? She hopes so!
06/21/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Luca was nervous and cautious when entering the assessment; it took a bit of coaxing for Luca to approach the assessor. She was tense during handling, with fearful body language. She is fearful while playing tag and continually attempted to exit the game. She ate faster, was stiff and difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. She had no interest in toys or rawhide. Luca was very tense and nervous, continually pacing and circling throughout the assessment. She allowed all handling to be conducted without issue but was clearly uncomfortable. Due to Luca’s fearful nature and cautious behavior along with her mildly concerning behavior around food, gulping and becoming a bit stiff, the Behavior Department recommends she go to an experienced home with no young children. If there are older children in the home an in-depth interaction should be conducted prior to adoption. Potential adopters should be able to provide positive experiences for Luca. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Luca be given the opportunity to interact at their own pace. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is tucked, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful and repeatedly tries to exit. Dog is crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body a bit stiff. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Food 3. Dog follows the dish, her tail between her legs, ears are forward. Her body is a bit stiff. Dog does lift her head from the bowl when moderate pressure from hand is applied to her cheek. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs Luca is nervous but allows greeting. Over time he becomes more comfortable but does not interact beyond sniffing.
