05/21/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper Dog:A1024540 Loaf came into the care center as a stray with minor wounds due to a possible incident with another dog. At intake Loaf was noted to be exuberant for introduction and was receptive and energetic for all handling. It was also noted that Loaf was very insistent on leash but responsive to guidance. During SAFER Loaf was sociable towards the assessor, and maintained a loose body posture for the handling items, but during the tag interaction Loaf became overly aroused mouthing the leash with stiff body language, and he was slow to de-escalate needing intervention to help redirect him to more appropriate behavior. During the resources portions of the assessment loaf became stiff and growled when the assessor attempted to remove the food and rawhide items, and was not interested in the toys. During the dog-dog interaction Loaf rushed in quickly towards the helper dog with stiff body language. In addition to the potential guarding behaviors seen during the assessment, Loaf seems to be uncomfortable around other dogs, and observations in the care center along with the possible history of a scuffle with another dog make the behavior department feel that Loaf would do best as the only dog in the home. We also suggest positive reinforcement-based counterconditioning to address his behavior around other dogs. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, body stiff and mouths the leash. Squeeze 1 & 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Food: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his body stiff and weight shifted forward, ears back, whale eyed, lip licks and head low.
