10/21/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Say it with me now….awwwwwwwwww! Those dark eyes are like pools of liquid love and who could resist such a pleading expression for more than a second without offering a hug, a kiss or a tasty treat? Certainly not this volunteer! Dumpling is just as delightful and comforting as her name suggests and her lap hugs are simply the BEST! She’s a shy but playful pup and though her life has clearly been a bit rough up until now and her poor skin shows that lack of care in some hairless patches and small scars, I think this petite princess is absolutely beautiful. Dumpling knows how to sit for treats and mouth them politely, she comes when called, walks well in harness and seems to be quite house trained too. When it comes to playtime, she leaps and bounds after a tennis ball like the baby she still is, and as I said, her sweet snuggles are legendary. Though she’s somewhat hand-shy when approached from above, once settled with her front half on my lap Dumpling is so happy and content to be held, petted and sweet-talked it seems like hours could pass before either of us makes another move! Dumpling is downright irresistible and to meet her once is to love her forever. Visit our Care Center, hold her in your arms and believe me, you’ll never want to let her go…
10/20/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Dumpling pulls a bit on leash. She was calm and relaxed during handling. Dumplingwas calm and relaxed when playing tag with assessor. She ate faster, was stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. Dumpling was not interested in toys but took the rawhide away with a soft body language. Dumpling may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address her possible food guarding behavior. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, ears back, open mouth. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Food 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. She does not lift head when hand is applied to cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. she does not place her body between you and the rawhide. When off leash with other dogs Dumpling is nervous and uncomfortable with approach. She will allow brief greeting but is more interested in keeping to herself. 10/18 update: Liannie briefly attempts to solicit play with males and females. 10/19: Liannie engages in running play with another playful dog.
