Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper dog: A1036237 Leo came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. Upon intake Leo allowed the admission counselor to handle him. During his medical exam he was friendly and allowed all handling. Leo walked well outside on the leash during his relief walk. During SAFFER Leo walked into the assessment room body relaxed, sensitivity his body was soft and ears down, tag-interaction he joins the game with his body soft but mounts the assessor at the end of the game. When the first paw squeeze was attempted Leo tried to bite the assessor hand. Due to these concerns we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 5. Dog tries to bite. Food 1: No interest Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish rawhide to you. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long.
