03/18/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Lemur looks like a little deer…..She is an adorable medium sized pup at nine months of age, very welcoming in her kennel and ready for company. Lemur walks well on the leash and eliminates as we leave the building (we can not guarantee perfect house training in a young dog). Her tail is wagging, her eyes are bright. She is clearly happy to be out…One dog, two dogs, three dogs pass us by. She has to play bow to each of them. She so wants to meet them. She even stands on her hinds to see where they might have gone….Leash free in a pen, she comes when called, sits for treats and hops on the bench for bonding time. She runs after a ball and plays with it. She does not retrieve yet. Lemur has lovely and soft manners that match her delicate looks. She has been well cared for until her abandonment (yes, this little beauty was found as a stray), is very healthy looking and wears a perfect red fox coat. Lemur aced her behavioral evaluation at the care center and is now just waiting to meet you and become your friend…your forever best friend.
03/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Lemur came to our center after being found as a stray by a good Samaritan. She was friendly and approached our admissions counselor with a loose body and wagging tail. She took treats gently from the counselors hand and appears to know some basic commands. Lemur accepted all tactile portions of the SAFER assessment, wagging her tail throughout and leaning on the assessor during the second Squeeze. She joined in with Tag and grabbed the leash towards the end, but let go and settled quickly once the game stopped. Lemur ceased eating when taking away the food bowl, and flinched and backed away both times assessor attempted to push her head out of the dish. She would not relinquish the toy or rawhide without trading it for a treat. Her body was loose and wiggly at all times, with no escalation. The Behavior Team feels Lemur would do well in an Average home that understands she may need additional training to learn ‘drop it’ in regards to toys and rawhide. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Food 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away and push her out. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Rawhide 2. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the rawhide, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
