09/05/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: She’s older, she’s been around, she’s been a mom, she’s a little grumpy….but, she’s adorable in that bulldog way and I was waiting for the hula dancers to appear! She watched me approach her kennel, let me slip the leash over her neck and out we went. Her first priority was going potty and then we enjoyed a brisk walk to the park. She walks well, spry, and confident by my side. Purposeful I would call it – like a person with a mission. Like many wise older women, she has her own agenda honed through the years and coming with the wisdom of age. She doesn’t like being handled and doesn’t like her ‘stuff’ taken away from her. But approached gently, and letting her set the pace, she allowed me to pet her all over as she sat by my side. She didn’t solicit my affection, nor did she reject it. I suspect with more time she might even begin to call me a friend. When our time together was over she hopped right back into her kennel like a good girl. She needs a friend, she needs time, she needs to feel appreciated. I’m guessing that all of those things may have been in short supply in her life.
09/04/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Leilani pulls a bit on the leash; she was stiff and did not show social behavior during the assessment. Leilani was uncomfortable with handling she wrinkles her muzzle to expose his front teeth. We decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the resources Leilani growled and snapped at the assess-a-hand during the food bowl test. She was not interested in toys or rawhide. Leilani does not approach other dog, attempts to exit. The behavior department feels that she would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 5. tries to bite. Food: 4. Dog growls and snaps. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits. Helper: A1049819
