A volunteer writes:

Ten month old Leila was born and raised at home. She lived with other dogs and children and is  said to be easy to handle and very playful. Unfortunately, Leila ‘s mama was  jealous of her daughter and kept attacking her. Their owners then made the painful decision to “give away” Leila, the most adoptable of their two dogs…Poor Leila is taking this very hard… She cried so much when her masters left and has been petrified in our care. She appears calm in her kennel, her “safe” place but once out in the open, she paces and paces, tail under her belly, refusing treats and escaping human contact. A very gentle staff , though, got through Leila’s sensitive skin and hurt soul…Leila started to listen and to look around her. The unfamiliar voice and face who took her out everyday  became her support enabling her to deal with baby steps, true…with her new reality….She even accepted me in her new “circle”, ran after a toy and ball, excitedly and even passed her behavioral evaluation…Leila has still a lot of progresses to make but we know from the comments made by her former owner that she was a “good”puppy.  Leila is a gorgeous young lady who has been beautifully cared for.She is stunning and trim in her strawberry blonde dress. Her eyes are quite unusual, at times displaying a pale blue hue. Leila is still quite timid and a bit spooked but she is coming along and i know that in few more days being walked by many volunteers and aided by her followers, the real fun and lively Leila will prevail.  Ask to meet our little princess, take her to the yard, toss her a ball, speak soft words to her….She will be yours….to make the most forever best friend.

Leila is a superhero in disguise! She may seem like a little wallflower but underneath that timid exterior beats the brave and loving heart of a dog whose courage grows with every new day. The night Leila arrived she was frantic, skittering this way and that, confused and utterly alone. Her home, her family, her whole world had disappeared in an instant and I too thought all hope was lost. How would this overly sheltered puppy ever make it through her behavior evaluation let alone up to Adoptions? Fast forward one week and she’s letting me put a coat on her, sitting for treats, accepting snuggles, joyfully playing tag and even jumping up to give hugs on command–it’s enough to make you believe in magic! Leila likes other dogs in a low key way and is shy but keen to meet new human friends too. She loves to sniff and explore and enjoys working on her commands for a delicious treat reward and I’ve no doubt that with time and patience she’ll soon be at ‘full power’ when braving the wider world. Leila could really use a loyal sidekick to support, love and guide her through a lifetime of adventure and discovery…are you ready for action?
