10/14/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “I am Legend” immediately comes to mind, but this is not Will Smith nor a Sci-fi movie. This is our Legend, a sweet boy who is hoping to meet his new best friend. He’s shy but clearly wants to make friends, and needs to learn that human hands bring good things: caresses, love, treats, nice walks, and more caresses. Legend is likely housetrained, and while he doesn’t pull on the leash, walks a little zig zaggy, so perhaps is not very experienced on leash. He has the cutest little pouty underlip, and when he smiles his eyes light up. In group play he bows to solicit play, is social and a “gentle and dainty” player. He play bows to his person as well, and is looking for an experienced home where he can get comfortable on his own timetable. Shy but grateful for soft attention, Legend is hoping you’ll ask to meet him when you visit.
10/12/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Legend came into our center when a member of the public found him as a stray and brought him to the police station. During intake, Legend was afraid, tail tucked and hesitant to approach. After warming up he accepted treats and allowed all handling. Legend was timid coming out of his kennel. He entered the SAFER room cautiously but still approached assessor socially throughout the assessment. He held gaze during Look item for three full seconds, body a bit tense, tail low and tucked. Legend accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, lip licking, body tense, whale eye. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body a bit low, and was hesitant to approach assessor at end of game. Legend was uncomfortable with positioning for Squeeze item, requiring a reset walk and some coaxing, but eventually stood still and did not pull his paw back, tail down. Legend ate quickly and lifted his head out of the Food dish with a bit of pressure from assess-a-hand. He showed no interest in Toy and minimal interest in Rawhide. The Behavior Team feels Legend would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may do best initially with a slow approach and introduced to his new home in a calm, quiet, structured environment where he can relax and know what to expect. Look: 2. Dog holds gaze, body a bit tense. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands, tail low/tucked Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body tense, mouth closed, ears back, whale eye. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body a bit low. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back, tail down. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body soft. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away.
