SAFE 04/13/15 – LAYLA – A1030614 – BROOKLYN, NY
Safe 4-13-2015 Brooklyn
A volunteer writes: Getting right to the point, Layla is ridiculous — ridiculously beautiful, ridiculously charming, and ridiculously sweet! She is a big girl, but surprisingly manageable on leash. She seems very housetrained and takes treats like a lady. Her previous owner reports that she lived harmoniously with a small puppy, but can be reactive to dogs she doesn’t know. She has been reactive to some (not all!) dogs we’ve seen on our walks, but doesn’t fixate and seems to “get over it” quickly. Layla has unexpectedly long hair and arrived with a hot spot on her back end. She had to wear a cone, which may have cost her some of her grace, but was no match for her spirit! In fact, the hardest part about fitting her for the e-collar was keeping her on all four paws — Layla LOVES belly rubs! She is very affectionate and always wiggling her nubby tail…making eye contact with her or speaking to her is enough to tip her over! She’s happy to stay there for a while and any location is fair game — the parking lot, the hallways, doorways….she might be in the way, but this is one roadblock it’s impossible not to smile at (and stop everything you’re doing to kneel down and rub that belly!). Layla is waiting patiently at Brooklyn ACC for that lucky person that can call her their own!

03/24/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Layla previously lived with 2 adults and a small puppy, and it was noted that Layla got along well with the puppy in her home, but was said to not do well other dogs. She allowed all handling by the owner at home including bathing but the owner stated Layla may guard family members when strangers approach. It was also noted that Laylas behavior around small children is unknown, and she is very insistent on the leash. At intake it was noted that Layla was loose and relaxed when in the room, but was somewhat indifferent to introduction, and all handling as well as collaring was done with the help of the owner. When approaching Layla at her kennel, she gave a low growl, but was easily removed and very attention seeking once out of the kennel. During SAFER she was very sociable towards the assessor and had a loose body posture during some of the handling, but did become stiff and uncomfortable during the paw handling item. She was relaxed during the tag interaction and was not interested in any of the resource items. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Food: Inconclusive, dog is not eating. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: Modified off leash introduction due to hot spot on hind area. At the gate when smelling nose to nose with helper dog, offered low growl. When walking side by side on leash does not seemed concerned with presence of the other dog and fine standing across from the other dog.
