09/20/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Drum roll please! Introducing Lady! Our rock star little girl who has conquered her fears and come so far. So scared when she first joined us, she wasn’t welcoming and would rather cling to the back wall of her kennel. Moving forward a few days, with soft talk, treats, and time, she has learned to trust us and is welcoming in her kennel, her tail wags, and she’s a fabulous cuddler! It’s clear from looking at her that she hasn’t had a cushy life; her coat could use some TLC and she’s been a mom too many times. But, once you’ve spent some time with her and know how smart and loving she is, she becomes the most beautiful girl on the planet. Her leash manners are good, she ignored other dogs we passed on our walk but loves them and did well in play group, sits when asked, shakes paw, gives High 5 and High 10!! See what I mean? Talk about a rock star!! Thrilled to be snuggling in my lap, playing with a toy or showing off her commands, Lady is an awesome little girl and we are all so proud of her. She’s a hero and deserves to live the life of a beloved family member. She will love you to the end of her days…..I can’t imagine anything better than that. A volunteer updates: Bravery, affection, tail wags and a big smile…..that’s what defines Lady these days…..Loved by staff and volunteers who applaud her turn around, Lady is playful, snuggly, tail waggy and so happy to be out of her kennel for a chance to interact with all. She’ll do well with a harness and/or some leash training, but her leash pulling is minor considering that she sits, shakes paw and gives high five all on request. She’s smart, she’ll learn. She’s an awesome little girl who deserves to know what being a pampered pet is all about. It’s time to treat Lady like the lady she is…..
09/17/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Lady came to our center after she was found tied to a pole. She was nervous upon intake and difficult to remove from kennel the first few days, low growling and lunging towards front. After warming up, Lady was easier to handle, demonstrating Sit and Paw for treats. Lady held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, body relaxed, tail wag. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, ears back, body soft. Lady engaged during Tag game, playing along and soft ‘hopping’ her body. While attempting to position for Squeeze, Lady jumped onto assessor’s lap, licking face. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, licking assessor. Lady calmly lifted her head out of the Food bowl when assess-a-hand was applied to her face. She had minimal interest in Toy, more interested in playing with handler. Lady took Rawhide away, body a bit stiff, requiring trade up to relinquish. When off leash with other dogs, Lady greets and allows greeting, but will correct any rough play. The Behavior Team feels Lady would do well with an Experienced adopter without young children. She may do best initially entering a calm, quiet, structured space so she can relax and know what to expect. Once comfortable, Lady was a social, friendly, wiggly dog that was relaxed and tolerant of all handling. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, indicates play with soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, licks assessor. Food 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against her cheek. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, then walks away. Rawhide 2. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold, a bit stiff. dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Lady greets and allows greeting, but will correct any rough play.
09/17/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs Lady greets well and will briefly solicit by offering play bows and attempting to get the helper dog to engage in running play. She will offer correction when solicited with rough play. 9/18 update: Lady is uncomfortable with interaction, and may overreact and offer inappropriate correction when with the other dog. 9/22 update: Lady greets politely and engages in brief bouts of play with another dog. 9/23 update: Lady engages in bouts of running play with a playful male. She will offer appropriate corrections when the play becomes too exuberant. 9/24 update: Lady greets a social female well but then begins to assert herself and mount the other dog.
