06/09/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Lady showed good enthusiasm on a walk outside the Care Center. She pulled strongly on the leash inside the center and walked with a some more awareness of pacing outside after a little bit of loose leash conditioning, but was prone to sudden enthusiasm, as she tugged over to sniff this or that exciting thing. Lady seemed to keep loose comfortable body language during petting on her head, jowls, shoulders, back, and rump. She became animated and focused for a play thing, which was a twig she found on the ground and carried around in her mouth, retrieving-style, and from this experience I could imagine she could be fond of proper toys and especially interactive ones like balls or hurlers – – like watching a child in their uninhibited play I expect it would be a great delight to get to see Lady out in the world, in play like that.
08/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Lady came to our center as an owner surrender. It is reported she lived with 3 children, playing with high energy & loose, playful body. Owner states Lady is tolerant of cats and sometimes reactive to dogs & strangers, however she has been social and tolerant in our playgroup when off leash with other dogs. Owner states Lady is destructive to toys but enjoys balls and enjoys playing fetch. Owner reports very loud noises may agitate her. During intake, Lady was vocal and energetic, excitable but allowed all handling. It is reported Lady can sometimes jump up hard on people and play tug of war with toy a little too roughly. Lady pulled on leash for her relief walk. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft, tail wagging. Lady stood still and accepted the touch for Sensitivity item, mouth open, relaxed. She played along during Tag game, hopping and soft ‘popping’ her body, grabbing leash at end of game and needing a moment to settle. Lady did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, tail wagging. She allowed the Food bowl to be moved away but growled when assess-a-hand was applied to her cheek. Lady kept a firm grip with a loose, wiggly, playful body with Toy. She took Rawhide away playfully, hopping and jumping with a loose, wiggly body. Off leash with other dogs in our playgroup, Lady is social and playful, and used as a helper dog to potentially greet others. She will attempt to solicit play. Due to her potential for possessiveness, the Behavior Team feels Lady would do best with an Experienced home that does not have young children. She may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners in regards to chewing/tugging the leash and also in regards to jumping up on people. She may also benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, and play. Lady may do well to learn the command ‘drop it’ as well as trade up games. Look: 1. Eyes are averted, with tail wagging, body soft. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1.
