07/16/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Lace came to us as a stray with a large infected wound or burn on her back and neck. Poor Lace was in a lot of pain and required quite a bit of sedation. It is difficult to assess the temperament of a dog who suffers and is under the influence of pain killers but what I have experienced with Lace is nothing but sweetness and the need to be close to her caretaker for comfort and support. She walks well on the leash and does her business in one stop as soon as we enter the yard. She is an “immediate” lap dog and hops on the bench, resting accross my thighs the moment she is leash free. She cries softly in my arms and calms down as she is being caressed and talked to. She is not eager for treats but eventually eats some as I break them down in tiny pieces. She is like a little girl who is sick and wants to be babied while waiting for recovery. Lace sleeps a lot in her kennel, most likely because she is medicated to alleviate her pain. She needs to go “home” to be cared for, loved and heal. Lace is a pretty girl, medium size and dressed in lovely strawberry blonde coat. She is a friendly dog, a good patient and whoever will give her a chance, will help in her healing, will have with Lace, a pet loyal and thankful for ever. Lace is at the Manhattan Care center.
07/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Lace came to us as a stray after a member of the public found her tied to a fence. She was friendly upon intake, accepting treats and allowing all handling. Lace walked nicely on leash, no pulling. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail down. Lace stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft. She followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, settling easily at end. Lace did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She calmly allowed the Food dish to be moved, and lifted her head when assess-a-hand was applied to her cheek. Lace had minimal interest in Toy, playing for a moment and then turning away. She relinquished Rawhide easily. Lace approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, ears forward, body relaxed. The Behavior Team feels Lace would do well in an Average home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Food 1.
