04/27/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: The reception I received when pausing in front of Kiri’s kennel was such that there was no way I could deny her a walk. Her butt immediately started wiggling, tail wagging, and she did a little prance at the door. It was hard to not be as happy to meet her, as she was to meet me. I leashed her up and off we went. Kiri showed me she was likely housetrained by eliminating promptly outside. As we walked along, Kiri, though a rather large girl, was a breeze on the leash. At one point, I went to give her some petting, and she immediately dropped to the ground, rolled over and stomach-up, demanded some belly rubs. She wiggled about, paws straight up into the air, reaching for the sky, not a care in the world. When she sat back up, as I was scratching her on her side, her one leg air-scratched along with me out of pleasure. Not much is known about Kiri’s past, but it does appear she has had a litter or two of puppies and she was brought to our care center with her buddy, Keyboard, an equally as sweet male dog. As I took Kiri back into the kennel, a staff member stopped us to boast about how great Kiri is. “She’s perfect in everything,” were her exact words. She went on to say how awesome she is in playgroup and how she got a perfect score on her behavioral exam. It wasn’t as if I needed another testimonial to see how great Kiri is, but I beamed with pride upon learning this about my new friend. Come to the Brooklyn Care Center to see what else you can learn about this perfect girl!
04/24/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – BEGINNER
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Kiri came to us as a stray on 4/21/15 so we don’t have any behavior information prior to what is being seen in the shelter. Upon intake it was reported that Kiri appeared to be nervous but allowed all handling. She was very interested in interacting with the assessor when entering the behavior room. She allowed the assessor to easily conduct all assessment items while maintaining soft body language. Kiri did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. She proved easy to handle when chewing on the rawhide, but only displayed minimal interest in the toy on this portion of the assessment. The behavior department believes that Kiri can go to a beginner home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. She indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against her cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish rawhide to you. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Kiri politely greets another dog and expresses interest in meeting the other dog. She mostly explores her surroundings.

A shelter staff member writes:
Kiri and Keyboard were found together as strays, tied to a pole in front of a building. They are both very social, wiggly Pitties who will fit right in with any home willing to give them some love and attention! Despite her serious looking face, Kiri is a little ham, rolling over for belly-rubs and zooming around in playgroup. Keyboard is quite the charmer himself, and can usually be found sneaking some affection from the playgroup facilitators while the other dogs play. Please help Kiri and Keyboard find their forever families, and pull them online TONIGHT!
