King is a 10month old Chow/Mastiff Mix who was bought from a breeder at 4wks old. He was surrendered due to the Owner having no time to modify his behaviors towards strangers and animals. His last vet visit was in Aug or Sept of 2014 and had no medical issues. Around strangers King is fearful of strangers or animals and may result to lunging & hard barking if someone unknown gets too close. With his family King plays somewhat rough and becomes very excited. King has lived with a 6yr old who he plays catch, tag and tugs on rope with, his play style with the child is exuberant and somewhat rough (Kings’ a big strong boy). King only likes one female Dog he has seen in the building multiple times and plays somewhat rough with her as well but she doesn’t seem to mind it. Other Dogs or Cats King sees on the street he will lunge and hard bark at. King has bitten a person two months ago who was riding his bike and the owner believes the person got too close to King and King lunged and bit him on the leg but it didn’t break skin or bleed. King if left alone loose in the home will destroy things. When left alone King is kept in a crate, also at bed time. He’s walked three times a day but owner stated he only likes to go across the street to do his business and pulls to go back inside. King isn’t bothered by fireworks or thunderstorms. The owner stated King isn’t bothered during the following things: Someone touching his food/food bowl, taking away his treats, toys or rawhides, if you push him off furniture, bathtime, brushing of his coat, or if he’s being held. The Owner hasn’t trimmed his nails (behavior is unknown). King will growl and bark if someone approaches the owner(s) and or his home. King is described as loving, playful and hyper with his family and territorial of them with strangers. His activity level is described as high energy. He’s very playful & active, he loves to play chase, play ball (fetch) & tug with a rope toy. When home the Owner is followed around. Owner believes King needs a home with a large yard to run & play in. He’s in indoor mainly Dog who sleeps in his crate. He’s fed Purina Dog Chow dry food and his favorite treats are beef bones & rawhide. King is very housetrained and will only “go” in the home out of excitement to go outside. When left alone King is in his crate and will do good with being in it for about 5hrs before becoming “antsy”. Commands that are known are “Sit” and “Give Paw”. King prefers to “go” on the grass.
04/30/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Who’s soft and sweet and cute all over? You guessed it…King! Our resident monarch is a real head-turner with his elegant lines and beautiful markings but he’s still just a baby and I love watching him lollop about the yard in that adorable way bigger puppies tend to do. King is eager for attention and he enjoys being fussed over and petted, playing with toys, meeting other friendly dogs in playgroup and hitting the street for a nice walk. He’s good on leash and very responsive to my voice, and while he does pull toward other pups we pass, his tail is wagging and it’s clear he just wants to make friends. King likes people but he does not like to see us riding around on bicycles and as we stroll beside the bike path he makes his objections known with pulling and vocalizing whenever one veers too close. Lap snuggles are much appreciated, my own smooches are accepted with a smile, and there’s nothing in the world that can’t be improved with a big ol’ kiss from a black-spotted tongue – at least according to King! This gorgeous, young, neutered boy has a big heart and he’s opened the doors wide to love…won’t you come on in?
04/27/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
King came to our center on 4/24/2015 as an owner surrender citing no time to modify his behaviors. It is reported King has lived with a young child (age 6) and played exuberantly. It is reported he has “not been socialized much” and lunges at strangers. He was not allowed free roaming access in the home, crated whenever owner was out and overnight for bedtime. It is also reported King bit someone who passed by too close by bicycle recently but did not break skin. King growled at admissions counselor upon intake, but when offered treats, he approached counselor with soft eyes and body with wagging tail. King showed teeth and growled while coming out of the kennel. He walked nicely and warmed up to the observer during the relief walk. King was cautious when entering the SAFER assessment room, but body somewhat relaxed after given a few minutes to acclimate. He jumped up twice to lick the assessor’s face during Look item. King was a bit stiff during Sensitivity item, but allowed the touch with open mouth and tail above spine level. On third pass of Tag item, King lunged, barked, and growled, but settled immediately and continued with assessment, skipping remaining tactile item due to behavior shown. He followed the dish during Food item, but raised lip and low growled when assess-a-hand was applied to cheek. King was not initially interested in toy, but upon second toy offered he bit assess-a-hand at attempt to take it away. King froze and growled during Rawhide item. He was friendly and social with dogs during playtime, but growled at the handlers. Due to the behaviors shown under varying circumstances, King needs to be placed with a New Hope partner that can take their time modifying his behavior in a structured, routine setting that will allow King to relax by knowing what to expect and enable him to learn proper reactions to new environments. Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail above spine level, body a bit stiff, panting. Tag: 5. Dog growls, showing teeth. Food: 4. Dog freezes and/or growls. Toy 1: 5. Dog attempts to bite Rawhide: 4. Dog growls, showing teeth. Dog to Dog: Greets well, with quick wagging tail. Interested in playing with other dogs. Growled and seemed uncomfortable around handlers.

A shelter staff member writes:
King is one gorgeous dog! With his amazing coat he can easily take on any beauty contest. King was surrendered to our care as the owner could no longer care for him. King was known to be very protective of his family. He was kept in a cage for long periods of times which may have contributed to some of his current behavior issues. He needs time to warm up to a complete stranger and doesn’t tolerate other animals unless he is used to them. King has lived with a child before and interacted well with them. He will need an experienced owner to help him get over his behavior issues and learn again to love his new family. Come pick him up today at MACC where he waits for you!
