04/17/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hey there, new person friend! My name’s Kincaid and I am a puppy. Technically that means I’m still a baby but let me reassure you (look at me using fancy words!) that I already have what they call ‘grown-up manners’ and I know how to come, sit and politely take treats just like a big boy. Also, I’m a bit of a celebrity round these parts so there’s a chance we could be mobbed by adoring fans at any given moment. But don’t worry, I have hugs and kisses enough for everyone and I promise you won’t miss out! My people friends really seem to like it when I snuggle and cuddle and get all smoochy with them and my doggie friends (the nice ones anyway) are thrilled to see me and my happy wagging tail because they know I’m up for anything and always ready to play. Sometimes there’s a fence between us so I have to make little whines to let my buddies know I would love to play with them if I could and I might even get up on my hind legs just to make the point crystal clear. I never want anyone feeling like I don’t want to be their friend because trust me, I want to be everyone’s friend! When I’m not fulfilling my duties as a professional party animal I enjoy spending time retrieving tennis balls and exploring on leash and I know from the praise I get that I’m pretty good at these things too. And guess who’s got four paws and totally rocked his behavior assessment? Yep, this guy. So now that you know all my particulars, how about we make a date? I’m staying at the Manhattan Care Center, just stop by and ask for Kincaid the wonder puppy (told you I was a celebrity) and we’ll be BFFs before you know it!
04/14/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Kincaid pulls a bit on the leash. She was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, a bit mouthy (light). She was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Kincaid was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. She took the toy and rawhide away with a soft body language. Kincaid is an active, jumpy and mouthy dog she need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place his body between you and the rawhide. Dog-dog: With other dogs off-leash, Kinkaid was shy at first when she approaches other dog but then she was playful and tolerant around them.
