A volunteer writes;
Kayla walks with a low fearful body language on leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Kayla was shy during handling with a fearful body language. She became very fearful while playing tag. She did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Kayla was not interested in toys or rawhide.
Kayla’s family found roaming the street 2 weeks ago. When Kayla was found, she was very fearful of all people. She took time to warm up to her finders and is becoming more comfortable around strangers, but still retreats from them and barks if they continue advancing towards her. Kayla lived with an 11 year old child and was relaxed, playful, and tolerant with her. She was staying with a large female dog and was relaxed, playful, tolerant, and played exuberantly with her. She lived with a cat and tried to play with her, but the cat would just walk away”. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Kayla is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. The behavior department advises that future adopters should be able to provide positive experiences for Kayla. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Kayla be given the opportunity to interact at their own pace.
