08/10/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Kato came to our center as an owner surrender on 8/8/2015. He is described as playful, affectionate and mellow. Owner reports behavior around children is unknown and he is friendly towards strangers. Owner states Kato has lived with cats in the past and was respectful towards them. For exercise Owner reports running, jogging, and bicycling with Kato running alongside. During intake Kato was calm and relaxed, but once owner left he became anxious, barking and body tense. He howled during initial medical exam, but allowed handling. Kato pulled a bit on leash towards people and things he was interested in during his relief walk. He whined and barked anxiously when entering the SAFER assessment room. Kato allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft, tail wag. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, tail wag, ears neutral. Kato played along during Tag game, jumping and popping his body, settling easily at end of game. He mouthed assessor’s hand on both Squeeze attempts, no pressure. Kato lifted his head out of the Food bowl when assess-a-hand was applied to his cheek. He took Toy and Rawhide away, placing body between, body neutral, requiring a trade up to relinquish these items. Off leash with other dogs, Kato greets politely, but becomes anxious and wanders the pen. The Behavior Team feels Kato would do best with an Experienced adopter who can positively direct his anxious behaviors by providing mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, jogging, bicycling, etc. Look: 1. Eyes are averted, tail wagging, ears back, allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Stands still and accepts the touch, eyes averted, tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, settles easily at end. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Food: 1. Calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: 2. Takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, body neutral. Rawhide: 2 Takes Rawhide away, body neutral. Dog-Dog: greets politely, wanders pen anxiously
