07/15/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A little pouty underlip, big rabbit ears, gorgeous beige eyes matching the taupe color in his coat – this is one adorable little guy! He’s puppy playful and bouncy, thrilled to be out to play and make friends with both two legged and four legged creatures. In group he’s playful and bouncy, exactly as a puppy should be. When he sees a dog in an adjoining pen he gives a quick little ‘let’s play’ bark but can be distracted with a toy and a treat in our pen. He likes to chase bird in our path looking up as they fly away, probably congratulating himself at a job well done. He’s such a puppy! Kane’s leash skills need a little work as he pulls in his young enthusiasm to explore his new world but that’s all about needing guidance and positive reward based training from his human to grow up into a rock star adult. Kane is active, friendly, enthusiastic and ready to take on the world. Who’s going to be by his side as he does? If you’re a puppy person happy to transition this youngster into adulthood he’s waiting to meet you.
07/15/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Kane was initially a bit nervous when entering the assessment; he would approach the assessor submissively when coaxed but was trembling at first. Over the course of the handling portion of the assessment, Kane warmed up to the assessor and began to wag his tail with a soft body and even jumped up lightly to solicit attention. During tag, Kane was a bit fearful with a low body but followed the assessor throughout the game. Kane showed some concerning behavior during the food bowl test- stiffening and growling, but did not snap or bite the assess-a-hand. Kane also growled during the toy test and growled while attempting to bite the assess-a-hand during rawhide. Kane was brought to the care center as a stray; upon intake he was a bit scared but was easily walked into the building on leash. Kane was initially nervous during the assessment, but warmed up to the assessor during the handling portion of the assessment and allowed all handling to be completed without aggression. During social time with other dogs, Kane was initially nervous but became playful, bouncy and engaged in running play with other dogs. Due to Kane’s concerning behavior during the resource tests, growling on both food and toy and attempting to bite the assess-a-hand during the rawhide test, the Behavior Department recommends placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is a bit stiff, fearful, and trembling, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is low, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Food: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Toy 1: 4. Dog growls. Rawhide: 5. Dog attempts to bite Dog-Dog: When off-leash with other dogs, Kane is initially nervous upon entering the pen. Kane becomes playful, bouncy, and engages in running play when solicited.
