04/25/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
xvbn 04/25/15 14:11 Basic Information Kai is a 2-year old Cane Corso breed, and has been with owner since he was two months. Owner surrendered Kai due to moving to a new residence that doesn’t allow dogs, and financial difficulties taking care of him. Owner doesn’t list any injuries or health concerns; his last vet visit was August 2014 and at Broadway Animal Hospital of Riverdale. His owner received Kai from a friend, and their favorite thing about him is his “sense of family loyalty” and his love of snuggling. Traits & Personality Kai is described as medium active. Owner states that he is crate and house-trained, and rarely has accidents. When asked to describe Kai in three words owner chose confident. Affectionate and independent. Owner states Kai is tolerant around dogs, and respects their space, and tolerant of children and once comfortable he’ll play gently. Kai doesn’t have personal interactions with cats, but owner states that he ignores strays if seen in passing, and has no aggression or biting issues with people or other animals. Owner says with food Kai will growl if bowl or treats are touched while eating, and snaps if continued. He’s usually open with toys and unbothered if toys are taken. Kai isn’t a big fan of baths and owner says he’ll try to run, but once started he’ll deal with it. Kai’s nails were trimmed by his Vet, and owner states that he needed a muzzle to sit through it. Owner say Kai is most often acceptable of brushing and unbothered by being restrained. If unfamiliar person approaches owner or the home, owner says Kai barks until he sees the person. Kai normally won’t mind being disturbed while sleeping; owner says he will usually look at his surrounding then go back to sleep. For new family to know Kai knows sit, down, heel, and stay commands. He’s usually walked once a day, and plays in yard. He likes ball toys and fetch. He has a XL crate, and has stayed inside from 10-12 hours at a time. He often potties on grass, and when home he follows owner, but will stay if told. Owner says Kai is behaved while alone, and usually stays while off leash. He isn’t bothered by storms or loud noises, eats “Taste of the Wild” both wet and dry food, and slept in his crate. During intake he had a muzzle on; he was curious and would tug on leash to try to explore the office. He barked when staff got close to owners, but didn’t show signs of aggression. He remained calm after owners departed.

04/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Kai’s previous owner describes him as “confident, affectionate, and independent.” He is reported to be tolerant of dogs and children. He growls if his food bowl or treats are touched, and escalates to a snap if the interference continues. He came into the care center wearing a muzzle. Kai has been anxious and high stress since arrival, and is not acclimating well to the kennel environment. During his initial medical examination he was salivating, tense, nervous, and fearful. Three days after intake he continues to avoid handling and interaction, baring teeth and salivating when approached. He is difficult to remove from the kennel, and has not warmed up to his caretakers. Due to his extremely high anxiety level, an in-shelter behavior assessment is not appropriate at this time. We recommend a New Hope partner who can review his known history and place Kai into a stable home environment where his behavior can be re-evaluated.
