12/14/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Will you help me or should I request a genetic profile? Who were Justice’s ancestors? I can not make up my mind… Justice is a handsome gent, five years of age, dressed in a perfectly groomed semilong hair chesnut coat. His amber eyes are bright and his muzzle is greying. He comes right away to his door when he sees a potential caretaker. Although calm and collected in his den, Justice does not belong to a confined space. He is an outdoor kind of guy. Leashed in no time, we quickly hit the street.. Justice always has a present in store for the fire hydrant…He pulls on the leash but nothing that I cannot handle. Back in the care center, I let Justice free in a pen. He does not mind me putting a scarf around his neck and snapping many pictures of him. My eyes meet his so many times and he seems to appreciate caresses very much. He has been well mannered in playgroups with both males and females. Justice can sit on command and takes treats very politely from my hand. He paces a lot, inquires properly about a dog passing by, looks for exits and comes back at times to check on me. Justice does not look unhappy or stressed, on the contrary, he appears assured, sniffs a lot and marks…He is an independant dog, proud, and he is trying to situate himself in a situation that does not make any sense to his canine brain…What is he doing in this place when he had a home yesterday????? Our Justice needs your help so he can enjoy the fresh air of Central Park or even the countryside….Come and meet this handsome gentleman at the Manhattan Care Center. Justice would love to be your loving and faithful forever best friend. A volunteer adds: Handsome Justice has made a 360 degrees turn around…He is not aloof anymore or pacing the pen where we stay. He is one interactive gent playing with toys and balls and as happy as a clam to be out and have fun. His gorgeous eyes are so lively and ready it seems for all kind of adventures with his caretaker. He is a great walker now that he fell into the care center mode. The park is the highlight of his day… Justice would make I think a great companion to share your life with and a loyal friend to count on, no matter what. Yes, he is 5 but healthy, able and willing….Justice has so many more good years to give …Do not overlook him, ask to meet him and may be you will just see what I see…
12/10/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Justice came to us as a stray on 12/08/15. He was a bit interested in interacting with assessor when entering the behavior room. Justice was also interested in exploring his environment and occasionally marking before the start of the assessment. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression. Justice did become a bit tense and stiff during the sensitivity, look, and squeeze test but did not escalate. He proved easy to handle when chewing on the toy item keeping a firm grip on with relaxed body posture as the assessor attempt to take it from him. The behavior department believes that Justice will do best with an experienced adopter with no young children who can move slowly with Justice and give him a bit of time to acclimate to his new environment. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is a bit tense; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is neutral, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Flank squeeze 1: 2. Dog does not respond at all. Body is tense. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs Justice greets well and is interested in a polite female. He is tolerant of a pushy female.
12/09/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Justice offers polite greeting and is tolerant of play solicitation from other dogs. He responds well when correction is offered from other dogs. Based on observation made while in our care, the behavior department recommends that Justice may be placed into a home with another calm dog. Justice arrived into our care as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. When off leash with other dogs Justice greets well and is interested in a polite female. He is tolerant of a pushy female. 12/10: Justice offers polite greeting to both male and female dogs. He is tolerant of play solicitation but does not reciprocate. He responds well to correction from dogs that are less comfortable with interaction. 12/11 update: Justice greets well and is tolerant of solicitation but does not engage in play. 12/12 update: Justice continues to exhibit these behaviors when off leash with other dogs. 12/13: Justice is tolerant of greeting and solicitation, does not engage in play. 12/15: Justice offers polite greeting then wanders the yard.
