08/14/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: June is a three-year-old beauty. She is very gentle on her leash. She loves to go on a stroll. Perhaps you should consider if you want to take years of beautiful strolls with this girl. But you better act quickly, June will be snapped up.
08/07/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
June came into the care center with no information on her past behaviors in a home, and was reported to be difficult to handle upon arrival to the care center. During SAFER June was nervous and trembling throughout the assessment and has a crouched body posture. She allowed the assessor to conduct all handling items without issue, but remained stiff and fearful. She was also fearful during the tag interaction, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash with a low body position. During the resources portion of the assessment, June was not interested in any of the items, and was more focused on exiting the room. When off leash with other dogs, it was reported that June has exhibited some discomfort when approached and will give back off warnings (lip curling and growling), but will then escalate to snapping. Due to this behavior we recommend a home without other dogs. June has been showing fearful behavior and avoids interaction in the care center. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when June is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. The department recommends an experienced adopter with no children who is able to provide positive experiences for June. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and June be given the opportunity to interact at her own pace. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, or low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Food: Inconclusive, dog is not eating. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs June is fearful. She interacts with her tail tucked and when the helper dog approaches she will offer a lip curl and eventually growl and snap if he does not move away.
08/06/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs June is fearful. She interacts with her tail tucked and when the helper dog approaches she will offer a lip curl and eventually growl and snap if he does not move away. 8/7 update: June continues to be fearful when interacting with other dogs. She will offer a lip curl when approached and if the other dog continues to attempt to sniff she will growl and snap. She will seek attention from handlers. 8/8 update: Although June will still initially offer defensive behaviors she is becoming more comfortable being off leash with other dogs. She will begin to approach the other dogs and allow them to sniff her face without offering a correction, and she walks with a more confident body posture. 8/12 update: June allows a brief greeting but becomes defensive and will lip curl when the other dog continues to attempt to sniff her face. 8/13 update: June will allow brief greeting but will correct when a playful dog attempts to interact.
