BEHAVIOR:
Julissa came to our center as a stray. She resisted initial examination but this may be due to discomfort based on her skin condition. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, eyes averted, body nervous and slightly trembling. Julissa raised her lip during Sensitivity item, possibly due to handling of uncomfortable skin, so assessment was moved to resources. Julissa froze and growled during Food item, could not be pushed out of Food bowl. She had minimal interest in Toy and Rawhide. Julissa approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, ears forward, body relaxed. Due to Julissa’s reactivity to any tactile handling, she must be placed with a New Hope partner that can provide positive behavior modification. She may require time and patience to overcome some of the rehearsed behaviors she has done to survive on the street.
Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is trembling; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 5. Dog freezes, raises lip.
Food 4. Dog freezes and growls.
Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away.
Rawhide 1. No interest.
Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip neutral
