04/05/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: With his smoldering eyes, chiseled features, and statuesque physique, JR has to be just about the most handsome dog I have ever met. But my first impression was quite the opposite. I see a large dark shape laying frozen in the back of his kennel. I see the whites of his eyes. I hear a low growl. But with the offering and accepting of a hot dog piece, I sense JR is a good dog. I open the door and he slowly rises, his now softened eyes meeting mine. Surprisingly, JR requires only a bit of coaxing before stepping out. A second later I know he regrets it. JR’s eyes dart as he is on high alert, sticking close to the only thing he knows right now: me. He is all anxiety and hesitation, so we stop for a moment of petting which he readily accepts. JR shows his appreciation by slowly rising up to place his big feet on my chest and I am face to face with his majesty. He is a hugger. It is a loving gesture and when I easily push him off, he responds by licking my hand. Even though JR is clearly uncomfortable in his new surroundings I decide to venture into the street. He has no choice but to follow reluctantly until the sounds of the city become too much and JR’s eyes widen, his nerves get the better of him and he tries with all his might to back out of the slip lead around his neck. I move toward him and he relaxes a bit, but clearly JR is not up to an afternoon walk. Loose in a backyard pen, he prefers to sit next to me (he is a close talker!) rather than explore but eventually he does move around a bit, tries to chase a ball, thinks about checking out the dog next door, sniffs another hot dog piece. I can’t imagine what kind of life this youngster was living prior to his arrival here. Though physically JR has been well cared for, he hasn’t been exposed to much of the world. Nor has he had much exposure to other dogs. He prefers to avoid them as he does everything else unfamiliar. Because he bonds so quickly, JR does have some social skills. So far he has interacted well with everyone he’s met, though he is easily distracted and often preoccupied. Right now JR can’t quite get his bearings. He is as unsure of himself as he is the environment. It took this big boy almost 30 minutes before he was able to finally pee and that feat lasted a full 30 seconds! As the days pass and JR’s comfort zone increases we’ll know much more about him.
04/07/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
JR came to our center on 4/2/2015 when he was found as a stray. He barked at another employee as he walked down the hall for his relief walk. Entering the SAFER room, JR seemed cautious, showing whale eye. During the SAFER assessment he allowed all tactile handling with low wag. During Tag he was distracted and barking at the door, not focused on the assessor. JR ceased eating, lifted his head and wagged his tail when the assessor moved the food dish and attempted to push him out. He played minimally with the toy and relinquished it easily. Very minimal interest in rawhide, sniffing it and walking away. JR was nervous in playgroup with other dogs and chose not to interact. The Behavior Team feels JR would do best in an Experienced home, and might benefit from obedience classes regarding his barking at strangers. JR might also benefit from visiting the local dog park and/or going on frequent walks, to assist in helping him get over his nervous hesitation around other dogs. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push him out. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away.
