01/29/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I wonder if Ewing is JR’s last name? I love that show and our JR is every bit as fun, playful and ambitious as the Ewing family. I love his two-toned nose, his wagging tail and bouncy energy. Any time is play time!!! He seems to love other dogs and is tolerant and engaged in group play. We played in the yard for a while, JR chasing toys, bouncing in and out of my lap for some cuddles and simply having a great time despite the cold. He showed me his ‘sit’ in exchange for a treat which he softly takes from my hand. He pulls on the leash, so will benefit from some leash training. As he likes treats, he will be easy to train with positive reward-based methods. Going potty as soon as we were outside tells me he’s likely housetrained, and his bouncy, social energy, his enthusiasm for everything speaks of a well socialized dog. JR is looking for an active home in which there’s plenty of play time and exercise. He posed for pictures like a pro, so knows when it’s time to settle down and focus. So, come on over and meet the newest superstar….JR!!

01/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
On 1/24/2015 Jr came to us as a stray via NYPD. A staff member wrote “easy on leash, very happy and playful dog”. The Assistant’s observations: very friendly soft body walks well on leash to the assessment room. During the assessment Jr was friendly and playful jumping up to lick the Assessor’s face. He allowed the Assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items and accepted handling very well. When pushed away by the “assess-a-hand” Jr lifted his head from the food bowl. When presented with a toy and rawhide Jr playfully approached the Assessor for a game of tug-of -war and keep away. He relinquished the toy and kept a firm grip on a rawhide. No behavior issues: no aggression noted. Jr is a very friendly and playful dog who should be a great family pet. It is the Recommendation of the Behavior Department Jr may be adopted by an average owner. Look: 1 Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted Sensitivity: 1 Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, and open mouth. Tag: 1 Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins Squeeze 1: 1 Dog does not respond at all for three seconds Squeeze 2: 1 Dog does not respond at all for three seconds Food: 1 Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push him out. Toy: 1 Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Rawhide: 1 Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. Dog-to-dog: Playful & seems tolerant
BEHAVIOR 3/27:
JR pulls a bit on leash. He was calm and relaxed during handling and easily engages in play, body is loose and wiggly, mouth open. JR did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He took the toy and rawhide away but had soft body language.
JR did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home.

BEHAVIOR 5/6:
JR came to our center as a stray so his behaviors in the home are unknown. He pulled very hard on leash during relief walk. JR held gaze for three full seconds during Look item. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, panting. JR was quick to join in the game during Tag, soft popping his body and jumping up on the assessor numerous times, but settled quickly once the game ended. He had no response to either paw Squeeze. JR ate quickly throughout the entire food item, and allowed his head to be moved out of the dish with a bit of pressure. He had minimal interest in the toy and relinquished the rawhide easily. JR plays energetically during social time. The Behavior Team feels JR would do well in an Average home that understands he is a high energy dog who requires daily walks and exercise to positively direct his energetic behavior. He may also benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners, and enrichment toys such as Kongs and Nylabones to mentally stimulate him.
