08/17/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I hear a dog barking(or may be just calling out) in the adoption quarters. It is John. “I need to go, I need to go……” His kennel is spotless. I understand. John is housetrained..We run to the street where John relieves himself at once. No marking involved. “Thank you! I feel much better…” John is a handsome, trim and elegantly dressed young man. He has been well cared for until his abandonment. He pulls slightly on the leash but nothing that I can not manage. Free in a pen, he acts happy go lucky and quite well behaved. He sits immediately on command and although he can jump quite high for treats, he takes them very gently from my hand. John seems to like other dogs, goes toward them with a relaxed body and a wagging tail. Same with people who come to say hello at our gate. John comes right away when I call him by his given name and sits with his head in my lap. He seems to love caresses and gentle talks. He might be an energetic dog as suggested by his behavioral evaluation but he knows what quiet and sweet times are, making the most of them…I really like John. I think he would make a very nice forever companion to an active person who likes to play, run and enjoy a pooch who believes that life has to be lived to the full extend of the word…John is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center.
08/12/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
John pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. John did a lot of jumping up, body checking and played tug-of-war with the leash during tag interaction. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. John was not interested in toys or rawhide. John approaches the helper dog with his tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long. John show a bit of concern during the tag interaction she became a bit over arousal. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2.
