Jimmy is a 10 year old male Jack Russell Terrier mixed with Cairn terrier. He was given to his previous owner as a gift 10 years ago but was surrendered because his previous owner is moving to a home that doesn’t allowed pets. Jimmy has no known injuries or health problems and the last time he went to the vet was 1 year ago. The two things his previous owner liked most about him were he’s active and loves to be close.
Social Life and Personality:
Around 3 year old children Jimmy is relaxed and playful and when he plays he is exuberant. Around dogs Jimmy doesn’t know he barks but around familiar dogs he is respectful. He was not around cats in his previous home. He is house-trained and rarely had accidents. He has a high activity level and can be described as playful, confident, excitable, affectionate and friendly.
Jimmy has never bitten a person or animal. If his male owner were to touch his food bowl he would growl and move away. Previous owner stated he didn’t react if anyone else did it. His previous owner never attempted to take food or a treat from him while eating or playing. He isn’t bothered if he is pushed off furniture, given a bath, if his nails are trimmed or paws touched. He is friendly if his coat is brushed. He wasn’t bothered if he was held/restrained, or if an unfamiliar person approached his previous owner. If an unfamiliar person approached his home he would bark and sniff the person. He was bothered if he was disturbed while sleeping.
For a New Family to Know:
Jimmy knows how to sit and lay down. For exercise he went on brisk walks 3 times a day. His favorite toy was a ball and his favorite game is fetch. When his previous owner was home he would tend to follow him around and when left alone he was well-behaved. When off leash outside Jimmy would wander but come when called. He isn’t bothered by storms or fireworks. He ate dry Purina and at night he slept in his dog bed.
Behavior during intake:
Jimmy allowed me to pick him up, collar him, and sat for pictures. He had a wagging tail and showed no signs of aggression.
Jimmy came to us as an owner surrender on 12/22/15. It was reported by the owner that Jimmy has been around children, and is relaxed and playful when around them. Around other dogs Jimmy is said to bark at dogs that are unfamiliar to him, but he is respectful towards the dogs he knows. It was reported that he may have growled when one particular owner touched the food, so we recommend leaving him alone while he’s eating, but he has never escalated and did not react to other family members approaching his food bowl. He was very interested in interacting with the assessor when entering the behavior room. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items while maintaining very soft body language. He showed no interest in the toy on this portion of the assessment. Based on all known behavior information the behavior department believes that Jimmy can go to an adopter with an average amount of dog experience.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Toy 1: No interest.
When off leash with other dogs, Jimmy keeps to himself and avoids interaction.
12/24: Jimmy mostly keeps to himself.
