09/18/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/18/15 12:19 Basic Info: Jimmy is a 5 year old neutered dog who has no known injuries or medical problems. He was surrendered to the shelter due to personal problems with the owner. Social life and Personality: According to owner he lived with one child and was relaxed and playful but would play roughly and when the child was too loud/excited he would growl but did not bite. He has not been around any other dogs or cats so his behaviors are unknown. He is house trained, kept mostly indoors, and has a medium to high level of energy. He was described as friendly, confident, excitable, and affectionate. Behavior: He has not bitten anyone or any animal before but when an unexpected sound or person approached from behind him he will growl and be stiff bodied. When owner took food away he would become stiff bodied and growl. When toys were taken away he was relaxed and would attempt to play but allows toy to be taken away. When given a bath he is nervous and will attempt to escape. When paws were touched/nails clipped he will pull paw back slightly but is not bothered. He enjoys being brushed. New Family Info: He knows the sit, down, and stay commands. He is used to brisk walks on leash about 2-3 times a week. He will play with all toys but prefers squeaky toys the most and will play chase, tug, and fetch. He has not been crate trained and will go to the bathroom on pee pads. At home he followed owner around but if there owner was in the same room he will lay down in a favorite spot. When left home alone he is well behaved but at times will whine. Loud noises such as fireworks or thunder will make him nervous and he will whine, cry, and hide. He was fed dry food and slept on a dog bed. Intake Behavior: During intake allowed all handling without aggression. When scanned was negative for a microchip and when touched had soft body. He would whine throughout intake and when given treat showed no interested. When given sit and stay commands he would respond.
09/21/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Jimmy is a handsome Hound left with us for no fault of his own. He lived pretty sheltered with his human family comprising of a child, rarely walked, although house trained but reduced to use weewee pads…He never really mingled much with strangers, other pooches or cats. He is said to be well behaved, affectionate, very playful, even rowdy at times and prefers not to be bothered when he eats. Here, at the care center, Jimmy is a little anxious, understandably and cries at times. Hopefully with more contact with staff and volunteers, he will feel a little better while waiting to be adopted. Jimmy walks beautifully on the leash and does his business as soon as we exit the care center. He is quite good looking in his immaculate vanilla and cinnamon coat faintly dotted. His eyes are bright, looking gently and accepting of me. He does not want treats but accepts my caresses, even sits on command. His tail wags quite a bit. He is curious in a calm way of other dogs passing by our pen. It is not easy for a gentleman close to middle age to find his bearings in the situation he is in…Jimmy is a very good looking dog who was quite well cared for by his previous owners. A new home and a new master are in order….Come to the Manhattan Care Center and meet Jimmy that I also call Mr Freckles…he might be your new forever best friend.
09/21/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Jimmy was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag; however, he quickly became anxious and began whining and pacing the room. He would approach the assessor with a soft body when called and allowed all handling to be conducted with ease, whining throughout. He was distracted and focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag interaction. Jimmy had no interest in food or rawhide, but growled on the assessor’s last attempt to take away the toy. Jimmy was surrender to the care center due to personal issues; upon intake, he allowed all handling to be conducted without issue and responded to the commands “sit” and “stay.” According to his owner, Jimmy lived with a child and was relaxed and would play rough; when the child was too loud/excited Jimmy would growl but not snap or bite. He is described as friendly, confident, excitable, & affectionate. He never bit anyone, but his owners report that when an unexpected sound or person approached from behind him he will growl & stiffen. It was stated that he would stiffen & growl when food was taken away, but with toys he was relaxed and would attempt to play and allows it to be taken away. When left home alone he is well behaved but at times will whine. Throughout the assessment, Jimmy displayed anxious behaviors, whining and pacing repeatedly, but he approached the assessor with a soft body. Due to his display of anxious behaviors, reported guarding behavior with food & displayed behavior during toy test, the Behavior Department recommends Jimmy go to an experienced home with no children that is comfortable monitoring and positively modifying any guarding behaviors that may manifest in a home environment. Introductions should be done slowly and Jimmy should be allowed to approach new people at his own pace. Look:1. Holds gaze, soft eyes, soft body. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Dog is whining, lip lick Sensitivity:1.Stands still & accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, & tail is in neutral position, relaxed body posture. Mouth is open and whining Tag:2.Not fearful, but unresponsive to the Assessor, & approaches the Assessor at the end of the game, needs coaxing to approach. Focused on stimuli other than the Assessor Squeeze 1&2:1.Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted & ears are relaxed, licks assessor’s hand Food&Rawhide:No interest Toy 1:4.Dog growls
