A staff member writes: Jessie is a brown female American pitbull mix who was brought into ACC today as a stray dog. Jessie is not spayed and she appears healthy. She was calm and well behaved throughout the Intake process. She allowed herself to be collared and photographed with minimal effort. She also allowed herself to be handled and walked by various staff members without incident. She was social sniffing people she encountered and allowing them to pet her.
SAFER: NEW HOPE ONLY
Jessie came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was reported Jessie was calm and well behaved, she allowed all handling. During SAFER Jessie came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, she was friendly and playful towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Jessie joins the game during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment on food item Jessie bit the assess-a-hand when attempting to push her head out of the food bowl, toy item she displayed no interest and rawhide item she takes away the item with stiff body language. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is above spine, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is above spine with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins.
Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back.
Food: 5. Dog bites the assess-a-hand.
Toy: 1. No interest.
Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is stiff.
PLAYGROUP: When off leash with other dogs, Jessie greets politely and attempts to solicit play. She will engage in gentle play with other playful dogs and may attempt to mount some dogs. 10/7 update: Jessie greets politely and seems interested but does not engage in play when solicited. She may attempt to mount.
