04/25/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Jay’s gentle Labbish face and attractive strawberry blonde coloring immediately drew me to him. Although easy to leash, he would not move. His tail was tucked under his belly, he looked so scared although not threatening. I talked to him, petted him and carried him into the yard where slowly but surely, he started to open up. We walked a few laps, he did his business and took very politely some treats from my hand. He even sat on command. He accepted without fuss a scarf around his neck and did not mind the eye of my camera. The arrival of another dog in an adjacent pen picked his curiosity up and he watched him play, tail wagging.Jay felt much better in a relatively short time. Soon enough, he came when I called him(I must say that he never was very far from me), accepted my caresses and even gave me soft kisses on my face. Jay is really a very good looking young man, slender, elegant, well mannered, seeking comfort in us , humans , affectionate and who seems to like other dogs. He is at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting to have his chance to meet you and be chosen to become your forever best friend. Another volunteer writes: Could there be a sweeter dog than Jay? I don’t think so. Curled up in his kennel, he was easily leashed but then nervous walking past all the barking dogs so I carried him outside. He’s light as a feather (too thin so we’re feeding him an extra meal daily), and off we go to the park. I suspect that Jay hasn’t had experience with too many things before joining us….the stairs in the park were so scary…..he didn’t like being tethered for pictures…..and in play groups he’s interested in engaging with other dogs but is unsure of how to initiate play. We passed a bunch of kids and Jay stood by my side calmly wagging his tail as his eyes gently moved from face to face. It’s clear he likes kids and he became completely bouncy happy as we walked on. An expert snuggler, Jay wants nothing more than to find a new family with whom to snuggle. He gives the best hugs ever, seems to love everyone in his gentle way and is hoping you’ll meet him today.
05/18/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Update: Jay was timid and nervous when he first arrived at the care center, but he has done well during off-leash social time with other dogs and has warmed up considerably to his human caretakers. He is affectionate and social with humans and dogs alike, so we feel that he is suited for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience. 4/15 SAFER: Jay walks with a submissive body language. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Jay was shy during handling, but had soft body language. Jay had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. Jay was not interested in toys or rawhide. Jay was shy during the assessment but he stays close to the assessor. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. This dog is somewhat fearful and is offering signs of submission. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Food 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest.
