08/05/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Plain Jane- NOT! There is nothing plain about this cinnamon color girl…..her coat is clean and gleaming, her weight perfect for her size, her tail wags, she smiles and her pretty amber eyes are alert and interested. She pulls hard on the leash so will benefit from some leash training so we head into the backyard after she shows off her housetraining skills. Off leash she quickly explores the pen and raises her head to listen to the sounds around her – street noises, birds chirping, a hose cleaning another pen, and the sounds of other dogs nearby. She wags her tail, comes when called, chases a toy but only plays with it briefly. Clearly a pampered pet before joining us, Jane is quiet and low key, and seems a bit anxious at times. In group play she’s tolerant, greets others briefly and also at times seems a bit anxious. If she were a person we’d say about her that “she keeps her own counsel”, meaning she doesn’t get overly involved with others, is non judgmental and simply happy to quietly be there. She aced her behavior assessment indicating she’ll be a good fit in most homes. Come meet her today and see if she’ll fit in yours…..
08/03/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Jane came to our center after she was abandoned and tied to a fence. She was very timid and scared upon intake, tail tucked, but was calm and quiet and showed no signs of aggression. Jane pulled hard at times on her leash when she finds something she is interested in, but walks nicely at other times with no pulling. Jane held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, tail wagging, body soft. She leaned away during Sensitivity, but accepted the touch, tail slightly tucked. Jane was distracted and unresponsive to the assessor during Tag game, but approached at the end with some coaxing. She did not pull her paw back at both Squeeze attempts, open mouth panting. Jane lifted her head out of the Food dish easily once asses-a-hand was applied to her cheek. She briefly engaged enthusiastically with Toy, pouncing and popping her body, but only briefly and then lost interest. She had no interest in Rawhide. When off leash with other dogs, Jane greets very briefly. She is tolerant of interaction, but becomes very distracted by other stimuli in the yard. The Behavior Team feels Jane would do well in an Average home. She may need time to warm up and relax in her new home so she knows what to expect. She may also benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and focus. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body, slow wag. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans away and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is tucked. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1/ 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed, mouth open and panting. Food 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against her cheek. Toy 1. Engages in enthusiastic play briefly, then loses interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Jane greets very briefly. She is tolerant of interaction, but becomes very distracted by other stimuli in the yard.
