05/31/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: There are some dogs you fall in love with for the dog they are at the shelter, and some dogs you fall in love with for the dog you know they can become away from the shelter. And Jacquline is both. She was found with another female dog, and both were escorted to Brooklyn ACC by the police. Jacquline is small and carries herself even smaller. Her worried facial expression and rough coat give her the appearance of an older dog. She is staying in the adoption room with the small dogs, where it is more quiet. I’m told she also participates in the small dog playgroup — it’s less overwhelming. She is reluctant to come out of her cage, but once outside demonstrates that she is likely housebroken. Until recently she wouldn’t take treats from me, but gobbles them up when I put them on the ground. When I offer my hand for her to sniff she is quick to lay down, and when I bring her to the yard she promptly crawls under a bench. Despite how scared she is, I have never seen Jacquline raise her lip, growl, or otherwise show any signs of aggression. And after several walks it seems she is slowly warming up. She will cautiously approach me and let me pet her all over, and even holds soft eye contact. Jacquline is incredibly sweet and continues to be brave as she waits for someone to welcome her into their house, and give her the time she needs to feel she is finally home!
05/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Jacquline came into the care center as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake she was reported to be was nervous and retreated when approached by a counselor, but she was tolerant of handling and collaring. During SAFER Jacquline was fearful, but receptive to a slow approach. She allowed the assessor to conduct all handling items without issue, but was unresponsive to the assessor during the tag interaction. During the resources portion of the assessment Jacquline was easy to handle when engaged with the food item, and did not show any interest in the toys or rawhides. Due to the fearful behavior exhibited while in the care center the department recommends an experienced adopter. The department also advises that future adopters should be able to provide positive experiences for Jacquline, and introductions should be done slowly, allowing her to interact at her own pace. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip licks. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Dog needed coaxing to approach the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is crouching, and lip licks. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against her cheek. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Jacquline is tolerant when greeting and explores the yard for a bit. She does not interact beyond the initial greeting but will walk past a calm male.
