A volunteer writes: Wow, what a dog. That was my initial reaction when I first laid my eyes on Jacob. His look, his temperament, his overall body styling, shined through in all Aces. At only 9 months old he’s already standing out, like one exceptional animal. Jack was a pleasure to walk, and more to interact with, he already knows where to do his business, in the street and not in his kennel, telling me he’s house broken. He is playful, as most pups are, affectionate, he’s got a wonderful coat to pet, (So soft and attractive) mostly white overall, with bits of tan included too. I can’t say enough superlatives, as to this dog, he was a joy to be with, so responsive, gentle, and affectionate. He seems to like other animals and didn’t pull, not once while we walked. He is a large dog, but one you’ll certainly be proud to have by your side. He seems to know the command “Sit”, good, good doggie! With these thoughts in mind, I hope I sparked your interested for a most deserving animal. Wont you please make your way into our Brooklyn Care Center today and meet with Jacob. I’m sure, he’ll be the one you’re taking home, to share your life with, be your family dog, and companion. Adoption is a most fantastical happening … By doing it you’ll be saving a life, changing the course, where no hope existed before … Make that difference … Do it and find out!
07/20/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Jacob came to our center as an owner surrender. It is reported he has not been exposed to children or cats, and has only briefly encountered dogs on the street. Owner also reports Jacob barks at strangers, and owner suggests approaching him slowly and letting him become familiar with the stranger. It is also reported Jacob chews and destroys things in the home when left alone, therefore he has been crate trained. Upon intake, Jacob barked and growled at the admissions counselor. He did not want to be touched and displayed a tense body. After he sniffed the counselor, he warmed up and stopped barking. Jacob mouthed the assessor with light to moderate pressure consistently throughout the SAFER assessment, during and in between items. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail wagging. Jacob leaned in during Sensitivity item, body soft. He engaged in play during Tag game, jumping and popping his body, but did not settle easily. At the end of game he jumped up and mouthed assessor, grabbed leash to play Tug-of-War, and took a few minutes to calm down. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, mouthing assessor’s hand and arm. Jacob required a bit of pressure from assess-a-hand to remove his head from the Food bowl. He kept a firm grip on Toy and Rawhide, loose and wiggly, playful body. He is social and playful during our off leash playgroups. Due to his surrender profile and behavior during intake, the Behavior Team feels Jacob would do best with an Experienced adopter with no young children. Any older children should have an in-depth interaction before considering adoption. Jacob may benefit from continuing to be crated when home alone, as well as puppy behavior classes to learn not to mouth and jump. He may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play as well as durable toys such as Kongs and Nylabones to positively direct his puppy enthusiasm and high energy. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, tail wag. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, body soft, open mouth. Tag: 1.
