11/19/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Jack has been social with his human handlers and showed no red flag behaviors on his SAFER assessment. However, he has been tense around other male dogs and has been selective with female dogs in playgroup. Please see the GroupBehavior entry for additional details. Due to these behaviors we recommend an experienced adopter prepared to use safety tools (muzzle, harness) to keep Jack and any dogs around him safe and comfortable; to provide any necessary behavior modification and counterconditioning that Jack may need; and we advise against dog parks and other off-leash group situations until these behavior concerns are addressed. 11/17 SAFER: Jack came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. During SAFER Jack came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly and very playful towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Jack joins the game during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Jack was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Jack appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns on this behavior evaluation. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog smells, then turns away.
11/13/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Jack greets politely and may engage in play. He is sexually motivated and may growl at some female dogs. He was uncomfortable when greeting a male dog at the fence. Based on his behavior during playgroup, the Behavior Department recommends that Jack can go to a home with a female dog but we recommend that a pre-adoption interaction be required. We recommend against placement with another male dog at this time. Jack seems to do well with non-playful or moderately playful dogs so we recommend placing him with tolerant, moderately playful dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Jack greets politely and is a bit sexually motivated. He may become bouncy but does not actually engage in play. 11/14 update: Jack greets politely and is sexually motivated but takes correction well. He will engage in brief bouts of play with a playful female but may be a bit pushy when playing. 11/15 update: Jack greets with stiff posture. He is primarily sexually motivitated continually attempting to mount the helper dog. 11/17 update: Jack greets politely and is a bit bouncy but does not engage in play. He is sexually motivated. 11/18 update: Jack became uncomfortable and hard barked at another male dog when greeting at the gate. He was not introduced. 11/19 update: Jack greets one female dog politely and becomes sexually motivated. With another female dog in the pen, he becomes tense and growls at her.
