04/20/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Izzy Belle is delicious. A squat, multi-colored chocolate and caramel sundae, with perfectly manicured feet! She is a shy little flirt as she slowly crawls to the front of her kennel, accepts the leash, and considers whether or not to accept my offer of an afternoon outing. But, with minimal coaxing, Izzy Belle thinks it might be worth her while and follows obediently. The minute we hit the backyard she wants to get all cozy and curls herself into my lap. Izzy Belle is a bit hand shy, so when I reach to stroke her rounded little face, she pushes even harder against me. Once the petting session begins in earnest, Izzy Belle is a grateful recipient. As per her former owner, she is an affectionate girl, who loves to play, loves hugs, and lived with kids. In the backyard pen, Izzy Belle is not particularly interested in balls or toys. When not lap sitting, she paces restlessly, but does calm quickly when I call her name. On walks Izzy B is in search mode and has a tendency to pull, but because of her size and responsiveness, this active girl is relatively easy to manage. Her former owner claims “pet conflict” as the reason for surrender. Thus far, in the park and backyard, she has shown a healthy interest in other dogs so it’s possible that Izzy B just has discriminating taste. In addition, we understand that she is housebroken, knows all of her basic commands and–my favorite part–has a healthy appetite. Izzy B “eats dry food, sometimes eats canned food, eats people food, eats whenever”. I don’t know how she maintains her slim figure, or why she isn’t interested in the treats I have to offer, but she doesn’t like anything spicy… so maybe she is simply being discriminating here as well. I can imagine taking Izzy B out for her favorite lunch–rice and beans and scrambled eggs–and having her cuddle close. I know it won’t take long for her to share her heart with an experienced, loving owner… especially one that cooks. Remember, no spice for our yummy Izzy B. (Just kidding. Dog food is preferred.)
04/18/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Izzy Belle walks calmly on leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Kelly was shy during handling, but had soft body language. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Izzy Belle did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. She was not interested in toys or rawhide. Izzy Belle was surrender to us according to her previous owner she get along with children and strangers but need time to warm up to them. The owner mentioned that she get scared around other dogs.” Izzy Belle was shy during the assessment but she stays close to the assessor and loves to be in assessors lap. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter. This dog is somewhat fearful and need time to warm up to the handler. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food. No interest. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog-dog: With other dogs off-leash, Izzy Belle was nervous she approaches briefly to other dogs.
