08/15/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/15/15 09:05 Basic Info: Hutch is a 7 month old male dog who has no known injuries or medical problems. He was surrendered to the shelter because he will growl, snap, and bite at people and owner didn’t feel they were capable of training him. Social life and Personality: According to owner Hutch was not around and children, dogs, or cats so his behaviors are unknown. He is house trained and kept mostly indoors. He has a medium to high level of energy and was described as excitable, shy, and fearful. Behavior: He does have a history of biting people but no bites have every broken skin or drawn blood. He most commonly tries to bite people when they enter the home or approach a family member and when there are too many people or animals around he will become nervous, bark and growl and if interacted with will attempt to bite. Owner was able to take food away from him and he will continue to eat until out of his reach. When given a bath he is afraid and will attempt to run away but does not become aggressive or try to bite. He struggles and will snap at nail clippers when owner tried to trim his nails or brush him. New Family Info: He is used to brisk walks on leash and will play tug with squeaky toys. He has not been crate trained and when at home will follow owner around. When he is left home alone he will behave well but when owner first leaves he will bark and whine for about ten minutes. Loud noises such as fireworks, thunder, or sirens will cause him to shake and hide. He was fed both wet and dry food and slept in a dog bed on the floor next to owner’s bed. Intake Behavior: During the intake Hutch would bark, growl, and snap at admission counselor while the owner was in the room. After the owner left he would slowly approach extended hand and sniff it. He allowed to be picked up while having stiff body but after a minute he relaxed and would sniff admission counselor. Whens canned was negative for a microchip. He allowed all handling after owner left without aggression and when given treat would take gently from hand. Any quick movements would cause him to have stiff body and produce a growl.

08/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hutch was nervous when entering the assessment, he was trembling a bit and whining; when coaxed by the assessor to approach he would retreat. He was given a few moments to warm up and the assessor attempted again to coax him over, he growled, lunged and snapped. The assessor decided to skip handling for safety reasons. He had no interest in food or rawhide and relinquished the toy to the assessor. Hutch was surrendered to the care center due to behavioral reasons; upon intake he would bark, growl and snap at the admissions counselor but eventually allowed them to pick him up and slightly relaxed, allowing handling to be completed. His owner reported that hutch has a history of biting people but never breaking skin; he has attempted to bite when people entered the home, approached a family member, and if too many people or animals were around. Owner reported that when food is taken away, Hutch will attempt to eat until it is out of reach. He becomes very fearful around loud noises, shaking and attempting to hide. The Behavior Department recommends that Hutch be placed with a New Hope partner that can follow up on his behavioral concerns in a more stable environment before placing him in a permanent home. Food: No interest Toy 1: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his tail high, stiff body, head tall, and ears erect, hard barking.
