A volunteer writes: Curled up in his kennel Hugs looks up at me as I unlatch his gate. He seems sad, and when I see how well he’s been taken care of I understand that he likely had a home very recently until joining us as a ‘stray’. He’s a perfect weight, his handsome tan coat is clean and groomed and he’s clearly housetrained ‘going’ the moment we were out the door. His leash manners are lovely and as a bird walked right in front of us he totally ignored it. He’s calm in the street, not bothered by noises, other dogs or crowds of people out on a warm evening. Hugs seems to love other dogs, so badly wanting to play with a dog in an adjoining pen, his tail wagging happily at the prospect of a good time. Playing fetch is another favorite pastime and he happily chases the ball, bringing it back for another throw, eyes gleaming and tail wagging as he waits for another toss. It’s no surprise that Hugs aced his behavior assessment earning him a place in adoptions as soon as space opens up. He’s a rockstar and waiting to prove it to you. Ask to meet him today. Another volunteer writes: Hugs is such a big mushy sweetie pie! He’s friendly to other dogs that we passed; he wanted to play with each dog with passed. He likes to give kisses and lean in for affection. He didn’t like returning to his cage though and would lick my fingers through the cage whenever I stop to ease his cries. He was more interested in recieving my affection than my treats. He’s the perfect dog for someone who wants a snuggle buddy. And another volunteer writes: Quiet and gorgeous, ask Hugs what he wants to do and he’ll tell you his favorite thing is playing ball. A perfect retrieve, no ball guarding, he’s the player you want on your home team! Throw in a good butt scratch and this boy is in heaven. In group he’s low key, not immediately engaged but happy to be there. Beautifully groomed, nicely mannered, gentle and low key, he also enjoys some hugs and kisses from his person, but then it’s back to playing ball. If you’re looking to complete your team, Hugs should be in the first draft pick. He’s awesome!
04/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hugs was brought in by police as a stray on 4/14/2015. He was focused on other stimuli in the yard during his relief walk. Hugs was focused on other stimuli in the SAFER assessment room throughout the entire assessment. Once redirected, he held gaze and allowed his head to be cupped in the assessor’s hands. He allowed all tactile items from the assessment with no aggressive behaviors. Hugs was unresponsive to the assessor during Tag, instead focused on other stimuli in the room. He allowed his head to be moved out of the food dish once assess-a-hand was applied to his cheek. Hugs had no interest in toys or rawhide after briefly sniffing them. He had loose body and neutral tail during Dog-to-Dog interaction. The Behavior Team feels Hugs would do well in an Average home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog smells, then turns away. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip neutral.
