05/18/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Looking at Hugh’s kennel card was like reading a series of mini love letters. “So playful and sweet!” “Just wants to be cuddled!” “Seems housetrained and is so easy!” I couldn’t wait to make my own note of affection so off we went on our walk. My fellow volunteers were on point- Hugh has great leash manners, is so responsive to his handler and did his business immediately upon exiting the care center. As we walked along, Hugh’s unique coat became readily apparent. He has tiger like brindle on his head, but his back is more muddled and dark. He’s smaller in stature, but he could stand to gain a few pounds. He shows me he sits readily on command, and he loves toys-especially anything that squeaks! When I reached out to scratch Hugh’s chin, he gently placed his paw into my hand, indicating that he knows how to shake. Excited to show off his trick, each time I’d say “paw” he’d enthusiastically give me first his right, then his left paw. So cute! Upon returning him to his kennel, I added my own sentiment to his card, “Ask me to give paw!” Hugh needs someone he can reach out to, paw in hand for the rest of his life. Could that be you?
05/11/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hugh was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. He allowed for all tactical handling items to be completed with ease. He engages in play, loose body, wags tail, mouth is open, jumps up on the assessor when play begins and mouths leash but calms shortly after the Assessor ceases movement. Hugh had no interest in food but kept a firm grip on the toy with a loose, wiggly body. He took away the rawhide with a cautious body. Hugh was brought to the care center as a stray. Upon intake he was a bit tense but did not show any aggression and allowed for collaring. Throughout the assessment Hugh was friendly toward the assessor. The Behavior Department believes Hugh may do best in an experienced home that understands he may need time to warm up to new people and new surroundings at his own pace. He may benefit from obedience classes, since it was noted on several occasions that he jumps up and mouths the leash when walking. He may also benefit from learning the “drop” command and trade up games when chewing on toys and rawhide since he did not relinquish these resources. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is down with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog licks hand. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Food: No interest Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy or rawhide, and he is a bit cautious. No growling or stiffness.
