05/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Young, handsome, lively, playful, friendly and good with other dogs…Houdini is definitively a youngster to meet and get to know ! He seems to have been well cared for. His figure is perfect and his fawn coat is impeccably groomed. At first a little bit tense, Houdini finds quickly back his balance as he spots another pooch in an adjacent pen and starts his advances..playbowing and hoping for the lovely female to join him… He even finds a ball that he brings to the gate…He really wants to play.Getting nowhere…, Houdini gives up and comes to his next best…me….I can play ball too. He loves to run and jump after a tennis ball, catches it most of the time and does not mind me taking it from his mouth. He is really having fun, dashing full speed through the yard.. . I am having a great time too.I have no doubt he was a pet and not a backyard dog. He was taught some manners and played with. Houdini pulls a little on the leash, is likely house trained, and sits on command. He likes to be massaged all over, sweet words accompanying my caresses. TLC does relax his body and muscles that were a little tense and sensitive to the touch.Bringing him back to his kennel was a breeze, mostly after the chase he gave to a bee threatening him in the yard….Houdini was quite tired and spread right away on his blanket for a nap…. Houdini is at the Manhattan Care Center, hoping to meet you soon and become your next forever best friend..
04/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Houdini was extremely excitable, and was interested in the Assessor and all other stimuli in the room. He was overexcited during handling, jumping up, grabbing at the leash, and was hard to position, but showed no aggression. During tag he became overly excited and began jumping strongly on the Assessor and mouthing the leash with moderate pressure. Houdini ate faster, was a bit stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. He had no interest in toy or rawhide. Houdini came to the care center as a stray; upon intake he displayed a high level of energy but was very playful. Throughout the assessment, Houdini was excited and difficult to position. The Behavior Department believes Houdini would do best if placed in an experienced home that understands he is a high energy dog who would benefit from daily exercise and mental stimulation. He may also benefit from obedience classes. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag 3 . Dog becomes over aroused quickly, jumps up on the Assessor strongly, begins to mouth leash with moderate pressure, and does not calm quickly once moving ceases. Squeeze1: 2. Dog pulls paw back quickly. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. He lifts when hand is applied to cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-Dog: Off leash with other dogs, Houdini solicits play but will back off when the other dog looses interest.
