11/28/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Soft as velvet, sweet as sugar and eager as a puppy, Hogan is a dreamy delight from head to toe! Fetching tennis balls and playing tug-o-war are his specialities and when he sees I’ve come to take him out he immediately picks up a toy to come with us. Hogan is full of happy energy but he never guards the ball or bites up the pull toy, and once he hunkers down to chomp on his prize I can pet that wiggly-waggly body all over without complaint. In his eagerness for exploration he does pull quite strongly on leash but he’s responsive to correction and soooooo house trained that time seems to stand still as I wait for him to finish up his business–someone has been ‘holding it’ for a while! Other dogs are met with happy tail wags and excited vocalizing and every passing person is seen as a potential BFF, Hogan doesn’t discriminate and all he wants in life is to play play play with whomever will join him. When it comes to easy companionship you couldn’t ask for a nicer dog, but don’t just take my word for it–his good behavior assessment and fan club packed with staff members speak volumes and to meet this smushy-faced boy once is to love him forever. Any home where he’ll enjoy plenty of playtime and attention would be Hogan’s dream come true, welcome him into your active family today and get ready to let the good times roll! Another volunteer writes: Walk into Hogan’s area and amidst all the dogs barking in their kennels, Hogan sits quietly close to the door looking up softly as people pass by. He’s so gorgeous and gentle I can’t resist taking him out. We head for the backyard and the first thing Hogan does is pick up a ball and play. He snuggles with me, the ball in his mouth, tail wagging, and offers it up for another throw. His eyes glow with anticipation of another toss, his tail is wagging, and his gentle good nature is evident in everything he does. After our time together we enter his area and he knew exactly which kennel was his and jumped right in. Impressive! Not only is he gorgeous, he’s smart! This amazing, handsome, gentle, sweet dog is looking for his new person or family. Who’s the lucky person going to be?
11/19/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hogan came into our center after he bit a man that provoked him by spitting on him. Upon intake, he was quiet and calm, showing no aggression. He was easy to place in and out of his kennel. Staff describes him as affectionate, appears to be housebroken, and seems to like other dogs. He has approached staff with tail wagging to solicit attention and allows all petting and handling. Hogan pulled on leash during his relief walk. He entered the SAFER assessment room friendly and sociable. Hogan allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, slow wag. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, tail wagging. Hogan playfully jumped and engaged during Tag game. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, tail wag. Hogan took Toy away, body soft, tail wagging. He approached the helper dog a bit quickly, lip lick, tail above spine level. The Behavior Team feels Hogan would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners. Hogan may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of exercise and play as well as durable toys such as Kongs and Nylabones to positively direct his energy and strength. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, tail wag. Toy 1: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, body loose, tail wag. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog a bit quickly, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward, lip lick.
11/21/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Hogan engages in bouts of play with other playful females. With some females, however, he will only attempt to mount (he is currently unaltered), and he has not yet been introduced to another male. Due to the sexually motivated behaviors exhibited in the care center, the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing Hogan into a home with another dog. When off leash with other dogs Hogan greets the helper dog with a loose body and is interested in solicitation but does not engage in play. 11/25: Hogan greets politely, he reciprocates play soliciation with bows. 11/27 update: Hogan is sexually motivated but will solicit play before attempting to mount. He responds well to correction. 11/28: Hogan is is playful and offers a few bows when soliciting. 12/1: Hogan engages in bouts of play with males and females. He responds to correction from a male dog who is uninterested in play. He is tolerant of pushy behavior. Hogan is a bit sexually motivated and attempts to mount females. 12/2 update: Hogan engages in short spurts of running play in a large group of males and females. He does attempt to mount a specific female despite a strong correction that is offered. 12/3 update: Hogan does solicit and engage in play with an exuberant male but is more focused on mounting a female that is also in the yard. 12/4 update: Hogan engages in running play with the intention of mounting the other dogs.
