08/15/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: It didn’t take long into our walk before compliments were being shouted to Hightop from across the street – other volunteers asking which room he was in, renaming him Zorro, or likening him to a panda bear. As luck would go, this adorable boy whose looks garner so much attention, is probably the one that wants it least! Hightop is shy and nervous. When I first approached his cage he barked at me in an effort to push me away, but accepted my treats with gusto and came out with me easily. He walks nicely on leash and seems house broken. When we encounter staff members walking dogs (and inevitably, more compliments!), Hightop did not react one way or another towards them. He lets me pet him without any problems, but is not cuddly yet. When we hang out in the yard he seems anxious – propping his paws on the gate and looking for a way out, but eventually becomes more at ease. He loves treats, takes them softly, and will “sit” for them. Soon he was sitting at my feet, resting his head on my lap, and seemed to start to enjoy getting pet, rather than just tolerating it. At one point when I stopped petting him, he nuzzled my hand and gave it a quick lick, as if to ask why I stopped! When I passed by his cage later Hightop started to bark, but then seemed to snap out of auto-pilot, made eye contact with me and softly wagged his tail. He may need a little time (and treats!) to warm up, but Hightop seems like a very sweet boy, very much deserving of all the attention he attracts.
08/14/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hightop came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. Hightop shows fearful behavior in his kennel; when the handler tried removing him from his kennel he would attempt to snap. During SAFER Hightop came into the assessment room with fearful body language, he would be crouch down while walking in the area, he was tolerant of petting but not safer handling. Not all handling items were able to be conducted as Hightop would not allow the assessor to position him on the Look item, his body would tense up as he lip licks with wale eyes, he also would try to avoid contact and exit out the assessment room. During food item he ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push him out, and Hightop displayed no interest in toy and rawhide items during this portion of the assessment. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push him out. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-to-dog: When off leash with other dogs Hightop greets well but is more interested in exploring his surroundings.
