06/27/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Hershey came into the care center as a stray, so we do not have information on her past behaviors in a home setting. At intake she was reported to have stiff and fearful body language, and became more uncomfortable when in the admissions office. Once out of the office she was reported to be less tense and appeared to be calm, but was still not receptive to introduction from the counselor. During SAFER Hershey maintained a stiff and fearful body posture, and when the assessor attempted to slowly place a leash on her collar, she head flipped and lip curled. Due to this response and to avoid further stress for Hershey no handling items were completed at this time. During the resources portion of the assessment Hershey remained close to the exit and did not show any interest in any of the resource items. Hershey has been showing fearful behavior and avoids interaction in the care center. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Hershey is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. The Department recommends placement with a New Hope partner who can provide behavior modification work to address this behavior and extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Food: Inconclusive, dog is not eating. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Hershey does not show interest in play and is nervous in the yard. She is selective.
